What is quality ?

The general stream of thought in this section of the forums seems to be to do with religion. Thus I think ill make a post about something completely different.

This is something that i've been thinking about for a long time and would like to get other peoples opinions/definitions on.

What is quality?

- This first came up in the context of design (arts?). What made a good piece of graphic design.

I wonder if this will gather a response.. i guess i'll wait and see.

Art appreciation is almost too personal to discuss coherently, but quality as it relates to hardware, technology, that I have opinions about what constitutes quality.

My basic standards are practicality, ease of use and overall design. And there's a part of the appreciation of quality that is summed up with "I know it when I see it or touch it".

"Art appreciation is almost too personal to discuss coherently"

In saying that your implying that art/design etc is subjective. That would mean that quality in design/art is whatever you like? Then in saying so couldn't anyone become a designer or artist?
Would the field of design or art.. or even poetry or literature exist? If the difference between good/bad art did not exist would Van Goghs' work be better then that of a 2 year olds scribbles ? Could literary masterpieces from authors such as Hemingway, Marquez or Shakespeare be told apart from a resteraunt menu?

How is a piece of technology any different to art? When did this separation occur. In ancient Greece this separation of art and technology didn't exist. In fact the word technology comes from the Greek word Techne meaning art.

One must also note that there are two different meanings for the word quality in english.
Quality meaning good and quality meaning a characteristic of something. In this case im refering to the former.
