Sania Mirza Kolkata, September 16: Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza will receive extra security after an Islamic group opposed to her on-court dress threatened to stop her from playing in next week's WTA event, police said on Friday.


Muslim clergymen have denounced the 18-year-old player for wearing skimpy skirts and colourful sleeveless tops on court, which they say are un-Islamic.

The teenager has emerged as one of India's most visible sporting icons following a sensational year in which she has climbed to 34 in the WTA world rankings.

I can. The Muslims go crazy over stuff like this. Why don't they just denounce her and leave the girl alone? Actually as I understand it, the conservative attire the Muslim women wear is to prevent men from looking at them as sex objects.

Yeah, but its the men who are in control, so what they say goes. They do it so their wives will be protected from the prying eyes of other males. It's sort of a terrorial thing, the way I look at it.

I understand what you are saying, but to them it makes sense. Plus how do you punish someone for looking at your wife in a sexual manner? I guess it's much easier to make the wife cover up then it is to punish someone else for looking at her.

Well she doens't have to obey it. At least that's what I read on Wikipedia. That said the Muslims are very serious about this, the men and women. To them it doesn't matter what she is doing so long as she covers up.

Yeah, but the idea that men should wear blindfolds in public has just somehow never caught on. I suspect that it's the lack of fashion in available blindfolds. Now, if only someone would offer a line of fashion blindfolds, I'm sure that the clerics that issued the fatwa will be willing to wear them and prescribe them to all men in their flock. And why shouldn't they? After all, they already allow religious ideology to blind them to so much of the world -- and I don't limit that comment to Muslim clerics.

But what makes the tennis star part of their territory? Are her relatives among those denouncing her? I suspect that it's because she is Muslim herself, although I don't know that she is. It seems that their concept of their own territory is rather broad -- perhaps taking in the entire subcontinent.

Well, tennis players have fuzzy balls, including women tennis players. Maybe the clerics lack fuzzy balls, so instead they make a big racket.

For that matter, why not demand that the the entire tennis court be covered up, from end to end? That would effectively end any oggling.

Problem with Man - Muslim or Hindu or Christian.
To apease the male - the western culture has turned women as a commodity . Woman fashion means shwoing the whole body . They have wear high heels , skimpy skirts .....low cut , topless.........

To appease the Muslim male - woman has to wear burkhas so that she can not be seen by other males !! Only the owner can see, enjoy the lady!!!

This is not a problem with religion but with the way the male govern the world !!!

What do you mean by a "fake theology", Zealot?

The difference is women over here have a choice. They choose to wear high heels, skimpy skirts, etc. Women over in the Middle East have no choice, but to cover up. Plus the burka was devised to keep women from being viewed as sexual objects by men.
