![]() Igneous Magma Location: Midlands UK Posts: 704 | Third-person-gaming and the soul Hi peeps. I'm back with yet another interesting analogy... Most of you know my views on the existence of the soul and reincarnation. I have been noticing a strong correlation between the concept of third-person gaming and the 'human condition'. A third person game (tpg) involves a character that is controlled from an external reality, even though the game character has no idea of this - indeed, by the standards of the person controlling, the character is not even conscious. And so it is with us. It is our soul which is really in control, and our present state of consciousness is hugely insignificant compared to our higher consciousness when not confined to a body. Game characters can also die, while the game-player lives on. Each new character begins his mission again from the beginning until the game player has completed it. The new character has no idea he is the fourteenth incarnation of the same person on the same mission! Many people consider that we reincarnate with some specific life-purpose, and repeatedly do so until that purpose is completed, before gaining a new purpose - the 'next level'. Each new incarnation is not aware of what has come before, even though on some level of his being he is more able to complete his purpose in each lifetime, because his soul has been learning from its mistakes each time. Now I'm not suggesting that because computer games are like this, our souls must be similar... but what I am saying is that this little-understood aspect of our nature is manifested in the kind of games we have created. Thus we create games like this because we are unconsciously giving ourselves clues about our forgotten selves. | Molten Ash Location: San Diego, CA Posts: 105 | An interesting premise and an interesting correlation. I'm lead to believe that it is purely conincidental though. You can make other metaphsyical claims using different games. If you believe that man is a god, you could also claim that games like SimCity get in touch with our unconscious and forgotten godly like selves. All video games have some sort of interative element, whether you be Duke Nukem, the Arkanoid bar, or a god in SimCity. This construct was a fundamental requirement for a video game to exist and therefore must have preceeded the idea that video games were created to give us clues about our forgotten selves. Unless you believe the Pong bar is a philosophical reference to ones own exsistance. -Mulk |
