What is self. A simple concept to grasp but complicated one to describe. Is self a tangible thing ? I am not looking for a strict psychological paper. Could the concept of self be glimpse of a fraction of god? Why should we as humans seem to have a intrinsic sense of right and wrong. Is this a learned trait, instilled trait?
Or a designed in trait?

When a thought is processed, by a sentient being, I feel that it effects (instantly changes) the temporal universe. Including its “ending“, and immediate processes. I think that there are many (but not infinite) universes, which are connected by a connection somewhat like quantum entanglement. There are theories that allude our brain uses quantum functions on a regular basis. This dovetails nicely with my theories.

And this concept of self is an illusion that is reinforced by our matter based bodies. Therefore it is the only way we can perceive our particular universe. In summary I would risk a guess that the concept, and reality of Self is God , GID, or a part of God. And it is beautiful.

The easiest way I've ever found to explain my attitude on this is to say that our "selves", our perception of individuality, is formed starting at birth through gentics, experiences and circumstances. Internal and external influences all add up to define who we are.
I heard an interesting discussion on this topic the other day. The gist of it was that multiple personality disorder isn't a disorder at all, that we all have multiple personalities. Most of us experience them as moods, or only notice them when we do or think something "out of character" for our general perception of ourselves. For some, though, these personalities become so real they experience them as "others", as real as their base personality.

The Self is that part within us that can observe our physical self. We can watch our thoughts, we can watch our emotions, we can become aware of our body and surroundings - within yet apart from the self that seems to be outside of the Self that can look out of this "window" to know the self, which self in not really the internal Watcher - which is unseen because that "inner eye" cannot acturally look at the "inner eye". The Self is that inner eye which is not composed of something physical. We could employ the name "soul" for communicational purposes.

I would recomend as something of interest one of Alan Watts writings called "The Book - on the taboo against knowing who you are". That last issue I found in paperback was put out the by Vintage books publishing house. You can find free reprints on-line by doing a search - type in Alan Watts in the google search engine.

I'll second that. Good suggestion, Technosoul. I've been a huge fan of Watts since my high school days. In fact, he's the reason I got so involved in the TAO.

mb....Yes I agree that these and other peripherals define self. I use a tree as (a rather bad analogy) trunk is self, the branches and leaves are our experiences, and circumstances.

mb responds...That is a interesting Idea. So what you are saying is that If I am having a really bad day someone with MPD would experience this bad feeling as maybe a different (bad or mean) personality?

I think that this concept would make a interesting research topic.

I have a different weirder take on mental illness, which will be another thread. (I think we all fractions of one entity all of us live in our own temporal universe and the manifestations on mental illness is when one universe has too much interaction with the universe that we call reality.

You described the sense of self as a glimpse of a fraction of God... I agree completely.

The weird thing about it for me is that there is no way to explain a sense of self. Another weird thing is that I feel that it is not natural... almost like on some level of my being it doesn't feel right to be seperate. I find it weird that I am me and not you, and that we cannot each see and share each others' perspectives.

Merlin writes...Orgaelin, thanks for the kind words. True Genius is the likes of Einstine Newton and Jesus. These Geniuses gave me the tools and desire to explore the our universe and not be afraid of dissenting opinion. Einstine was most profound when he said imagination is more important than knowledge.
