Posts: 4,412 | The God Who Wasn't There Has anyone seen the movie The God Who Wasn't There or plan on buying it? It looks like it's cheaply made. Any other comments on the movie one way or the other? |

Whether of not Jesus was a historical figure, the early church borrowed heavily from various other religions. I have always been intrigued by the similarity of the Christ to Mithras. Quote:

I agree, Rick, about the similarity between Christ and Mithra and other central godlike figures in other religions. Can't be concidence, now can it? I like to go to the root of the matter. When i heard of the association, i found a two volume collection of papers at the Rutherford library called, 'Mithreic Studies,' (published in 1994 i think.) One paper in there, i forget by who, discussed the origin of mithras as coming from the structure of the ancient Iranian houshold. In that structure, mithras was the (i dunno) contract agent(?) for the father of the household; he would secure contracts with producers and manufacturers (i suppose) on behalf of the household. Interesting how that fits with the covenant between God and Abraham; hmm, like he thought he was God, and then realized He's the Son (divided, i suppose:(). Another discussed the potential for the spread of Roman mithraism as being initiated by a roman soldier, an S. Barbarus (i guess there were alot of S. Barbaruses back then, as it was a name given to barbarians who served the empire well and so were bestowed citizenship.) He'd served on the campaign against jerusalem in 70 a.d., and went home to a town on the danube at the begining of the second century. Now, i realize this is extremely speculative; but if he started 'modern' mithraism when he got home, it wouldn't have been roman mithraism; which isn't to say there wouldn't be mithraists in rome. It would still appear along the fronteir, but on the other side; and potentially with political ties to rome, likely covert. | |

Posts: 377 | This is usually where it gets busy .I found an old book in a used bookstore the other day; it was about ture theosophy, or something like that. It was published in the early twentieth century as the third edition produced specifically to introduce the lodge to India. You can see the masonic iconography around buddha sometimes. |
