Personal integrity covers this.

If I took 50 bucks I found in a wallet on the side of the road, am I hurting the owner?

After all he all ready lost the wallet, and thus the damage was done, thus no real harm for him if I keep it, and gain for me.

But it would still be wrong to keep the cash.
Playing devil's advocate here, but *WHY* is it wrong? Specifically what makes it wrong to keep the cash? Is it just as wrong to keep the cash if there was no wallet associated with it, or if there was no identification in the wallet?

There are a lot of claims about how things are right or wrong, just nobody steps up to the plate and proves it.

OK, Lycan. Not contesting that some changes have occurred. But are you saying that no standards exist? May I do to you and yours as I wish, only prevented by what you personally can do to stop me?
No I am not saying that no standards exist... I am saying that because of the evolution of society and those changes, standards are not static but in fact relative to the time and culture.

There is a such thing as objective right and wrong. But its only possible if people can set aside their own personal desires and experiences and just the something for what it is.
How is it possible to set aside personal experiences? everything we see, hear and do is filtered through our reserves of experience.

There is no such thing as an absolute right and wrong. The reason's we have for justifying penalising those who break from societies standards is because we are a society. If people break our standards, they are in a "war with society", and we penalise them for the good of society. It is morally right that we penalise those who break our standards or else the group breaks down. It is logic, rather than holy or emotional, reasons that we should set those standards.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.

Lycan had it right, what is right or wrong is static and fluctuates according to those in power. for instance, in america, you go to jaul for opposing the army, even though the rest of the world agrees, war is bad, and therefore it would be good to desire a less than warlike method.

personally, I like to live with a bunch of people who all live thieir lives according to what they believe, and we all do. none of us follow the law, but we never do anything bad. not one of us would harm another, not one of us would steal. but if we found the wallet, we'd give it back, mind you, if we found a heap of cash, I know I wouldn't give it back. I'd keep that baby, there is no face to harm by keeping it.

same with ripping off majour, multibillion dollar corporations. if I can get a copy of Windows XP for free, when bill gates is the richest person in the world, I woulnd't lose any sleep. and besides, it's not like I can afford the real thing, or I would get it. same with music, I go to concerts, but I download songs. I'm not paying 20 bucks (canadian) for a CD that has perhaps three songs I like. there are only a few bands that I'll buy the CD's.....Sum 41, Green day, and will smith. (don't ask)

it's not that I won't buy them, if I had the money, I'd buy them in a heartbeat. is that right or wrong? I don't know, all I know is that I don't intend to do any harm, and the companies are not exactly poor because of it. in fact, all entertainment industries are booming, so it's not like I'm harming anyone.

of course, I could see why someone would think that's wrong, and I wouldn't entirely disagree, but that's how I see it.
