Bill Maher: Religion neurological disorder

Bill Maher (bottom of page)

'Television personality Bill Maher, host of HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" says Christians and others who are religious suffer from a neurological disorder that "stops people from thinking."'

Note from Gorgo: He believes in God, so why doesn't he include himself?

That's his opinion. I could make the same claim about non-religious people, they suffer a neurological disorder that keeps them from having faith, from thinking beyond what they can see or hear or touch. They are mentally deficient.

Einstein's "Theory of Relativity" is still being challenged to this day, but by consensus Global Warming is a fact... that's REAL science at work, why didn't Albert just go that route?

You could make the same claim, but you'd have no grounds for making that claim. There is no reason to have 'faith' in things for which there is no reasonable evidence.

A more direct link to that article which claims that Maher is a Deist, not an atheist as some assume.

Of course, Maher is against vaccinations, so another strike against him in my eyes.

Personal experience is reasonable ground to have faith in things for which there is no generally accessable evidence. I think the experiential aspect of being is the most glaring, and almost generally accessable, example. The meditative 'flash' is another example, and one for which there may be corroberating evidence.

I know some people who think lizard people are running things. These "illuminati" live in between the 3rd and 4th dimensions. They have "meditative flashes" which confirm their ideas. Would you agree that that is enough evidence for the existence of lizard people?

So he basically updated Marx's "religion is the opiate of the people" line. Big deal. People find lots of reasons not to think. Religion is as good as any other.

His rant seems mostly anti-organized religion based and I agree with much of what he says; although he could have been more organized in the way his collected thoughts poured out on the air. This is one of the problems with speaking in public, and it always will be. It's those who manage to say the least offensive, soggy toast like stuff that scare me. They often seem to be covering up evil intent.

Let's take these quotes further down in the text...

Quote:
"First of all, I never said I didn't–I never said I didn't believe in God. I said I don't believe in religion."
and...

Quote:
MAHER: "Excuse me. Religion is a bureaucracy between man and God. There is a very big difference."

Organized religion does tend to pour crap into little heads too often. Even the most open churches I have attended seem to do so. They also can create armies of mindless sheep who march against the Fundies, or the Secularists, or the... Personally if a minister, Rabbi or Priest told me who I MUST vote for I would be first in line to help toss him out the door, no matter who the politician was.

He says little against "faith" or "belief," except the "faith based inititive" comment. What Bill does best is challenge us to think. I find that interesting, even when I disagree with him, like the rather broad based neurological comment.

Gorgo, the illuminati are in Webster's dictionary. Don't know about the shape shifting lizards but I think it is worth distinguishing the two.

No, NO, NO! Please don't talk about the lizard people. Shhh! They're listening. Oh, wait... Uh, oh... I've got one in my pants... Hey, that feels pretty good.... :)

The problem with the anti-vacciantion argument is that it reduces group or herd immunity. A relatively small number of individuals in a group can significantly increase the overall risk of an infection if they opt out of vaccination.

When Parents Say No to Child Vaccinations

Besides everyone knows that if you don't get vaccinated, the lizard people will get you.

Damn rights! There's alot of noise out there, and those who prosletize noise; to the exclusion of serious examination. The suggestion that a particular group can't think is useful to NOONE. It's quite clear from our ostensibly perpetual condition that we are all rather dense! People are easily lead, and you only incriminate yourself if you trumpet some unlikely notion to the exclusion of needed contemplation on the most likely situation.

If you ignore the secret groups you'll never understand our political history for one thing, and you'll always be their puppet. Third level's the foundation, right? See, i could draw a parallel between the evolution of the cell membrane and the evolution of the 'third level.' Our culture, this timber in our eye, isn't dynamic like all cultures before it; it exists in a bubble surrounded by the 'third level.'

As has been pointed out; infact, religion is an evolution toward truth resulting from a reconsideration of the facts. Wha.. that's thinking; isn't it?

Believing in fantasy is believing in fantasy. It is a type of thinking. It is called irrational thinking. You are right. It does not stop thought, it is thought. It does stop rational thought, however.

Why? Oh, I don't know Gorgo. Maybe it's because they are two different things. One is defined in the dictionary and is historical fact, the other is not.

It's is not the idea of vaccines that are bad. It's the entities that manufacture them, the additives and preservatives in them that are the problem. Besides, eating the right foods and getting a little sick once every three or four years is much healthier than getting a flu vaccine.

jeffl,
