Does history repeat itself?

I was pondering this question, and thought this would be a good place to ask: Does history consistently repeat itself, or does it constantly change?

Sure. I eat lunch about the same time every day. Not exactly earth shaking history but it matters to me.

History doesn't repeat itself but it often rhymes.

It probably does, but the interval between the occurrences is probably so long that we forget about the first time.

History does repeat. I will not go as far as to say that one cannot have an original thought, but it would be far harder than one might imagine.

It appears that man has remained unchanged for many thousands of years, and that we really are no different than those who came before us. Recorded history is rather short, and full of holes, so it is difficult to asses what the prehistoric people philosophised about, but I think modern scholars underestimate them significantly.

Regarding the query, "Does history repeat itself?", George Santayana made his famous quote that certainly applies here, to wit: "Unless mankind learns from the mistakes of the past he is bound to repeat them!"

Therefore, history itself does not repeat, mankind, in his(her) innate selfishness and stupidity, has repeatedly made mistakes that history has proven to be wrong. Why does man not learn from the past, because he/she thinks - that is an assumption - that they are above anything that the past has offered!

And as another wiser contributor has questioned, if we have a limited and restricted, Constitutional and representative Republic, where are those limitations and restrictions?

For Mr Bradley, the Uniform Commercial Code only pertains to those that are involved in a contract or are "doing business" for a 'gain or profit'! So, why do you utilize a UCC section?

The wars in Vietnam and Iraq are not so far apart. The War Party doesn't simply repeat the same mistakes, it perfects them.

We were discussing this issue in another post, and I needed to replace my old title anyway. I guess I think I'm quite clever sometimes. :)

Wrongly so, perhaps, but don't ruin my fun for me.

Perhaps you would care to comment in the "Lawyers Are Unscrupulous Bloodsuckers thread.

That would make a really cool signature, or something, perhaps a bumper sticker.

re: Lawyers are.....

Where is that thread since I certainly do have some input for that kind of discussion!

I should have added in the above posting that George Santayana had stated some time past that unless mankind learns from the mistakes of the past he/she/it is bound to repeat those mistakes; and that is where we in the USofA are today. We are throwing away our inalienable Rights that the Founding Fathers sacrificed everything for and we don't even seem to care because the government schools have dumbed us down and the totally, controlled media maintains the dumbness!

I hope that works.

If not, the post is in the Society, and Rights folder.

to a certain extent

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.

That the "Founding Fathers" laid down their lives and sacrificed everything for our "inalienable" rights is a bunch of propagandic poppycock.
The masses, as it were, clamored for the Bill of Rights many years after the original Constitution was written and approved. The White House was threatened by a mob, and might have been sacked and burned, were it not for an emergency meeting of our "Illustrious, Illuminati Founding Fathers" and the Continental Congress. During which meeting, a rough draft dubiously entitled, "The 10 Ammendments" (a bit Biblical, 'eh?)... was drawn, featuring most of our "hard-fought" rights.
No, we were not afforded the Bill Of Rights, except under public pressure and outrage.
Yes, we are repeating that history, again. This time, public outcry screams to be ripped of "inalienable" rights.
This is not taught correctly in History or Soc. Sciences in schools. Ignorance is maintained through misinformation so that the same old, tired, trick can be used to dupe a self-engendered society that is dumb enough to believe that government is a good idea at all.
I for one removed my training wheels as a child so I could ride the two wheeler with the big dogs.
When will we stand as mature and responsible brethren, unneedful of governing, founding fathers, histories themselves? When. obviously History is forced to stop repeating. Again and again! When we are all "grown-up" finally.

No, but it has it's similarities. Yes, because a similarity is a repeat... of sorts. But no, it... wait, didn't I just say that? Am I repeating myself? Am I repeating myself? Wasn't I here before? I was in this car and the groundhog, Phil, was driving over the cliff and :p ... Oh, no, it's starting all over again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
