    "Surrogates" and It's Moral Issues

An obvious prerequisite for this is having seen the movie, "Surrogates." It will avoid having to repeat the events of the movie. You can Instant Queue it on NetFlix or see it on Starz On-Demand.

What I pose to the forum is the issue of surrogacy, in general, as presented by the movie.

From what the movie presented, it didn't detract from the quality of the world. It only improved it. It's not like it was artificial intelligence.

With the majority if the world using surrogates, crime down by 99%, and -isms (racism, sexism, etc.) almost non-existent, wouldn't it be better to have left surrogates functional?

Isn't it a person's choice if they want to live that way or not?

Many people are already living through virtual surrogates so real ones are messy and unnecessary. For example, I know people who probably consider the world of warcraft to be more real than reality. They certainly prefer it to the real world (whatever that is). This trend will continue until mankind lives physically in a nutrient bath but consciously in a computer simulation. Hmmm, wasn't there a series of movies about that? Unless we destroy ourselves or technology I think it's inevitable. Would it be a bad thing? Really?

Exactly. I can't see how it's a bad thing. The people with the inclination to live that way are doing so. It's their choice.

As long as they are still paying their taxes, etc., then they are entitled to the same rights as those who live in "reality."

In the movie, I didn't think people living through surrogates was a bad thing. In the end, I thought the main character was the "bad guy."

I did not see the Movie but I think I know what you are saying. I did see Sleepers though and I believe it is similar. Developments in technology are a fact we must embrace if we are to be apart of mainstream society. I believe everything will be surrogate in the future not by choice but because it is more efficient. I personally liked the A-track tape cuz you can record on it. Then I like the VHS cuz I can record on it and now I cant seem to replace mine. The advances in technology are not all ways better but we accept them. If you dont like it just dump your cell phone and your computer. Right?

I think the movie failed to establish the surrogate lifestyle as somehow demeaning to real life so that by the end of the movie I had the same thought as ZNFYRH, Willis had a megalomaniacal moment and chose to be the world's biggest party-pooper. He became more anti-hero than hero.

You have the right idea, but you should check out the movie. It's about people using the technology but it seems to have bettered the world.

Exactly. People were living safer, cleaner lives. Were able to be risk takers without really hurting anyone else.

Willis seriously tweaked the anarchist in me... who is he to impose his preference on others?

wait, risk takers without hurting anyone else? I dont know if i remember right but i dont think there was any laws prohibitting a "controller" to not hurt the controlled. If there is then let me bring up the example of "Gamer".

I think, that whether surrogates or not, we are still human and we will unleash our darkest fantasies with no moral "locks" to keep us in check and that is a bad thing.

True, but I'd rather it be unleashed on my surrogate. Let them get the psychological effects without the criminal consequences or ending my life.
