We aren't pushing our world view on you. We weren't even trying. We were simply saying how we can still enjoy our lives, in fact even more so, because we know we only have one chance.
That's exactly the point. The common attitude some atheists hold that they are living life better.

What do you say to an atheist who sneezes?

Of course in your one sided blinkered view of Christians, they don't do anything meaningful in life except pray right?
I guess working in a job and feeding a family isn't meaningful enough for some people.
I think you are confusing my opinion of *CHRISTIANITY* with my opinion of Christians.

Just because I think their religion is insanity doesn't mean I think all Christians are worthless lumps of flesh. I save that for the "special" Christians.

You seriously don't think christians are living their lives better then athiests?

Both sides have the same attitude. They just define 'better' differently.

Who said we're moral free?

Just because we don't have a standardized play book doesn't mean we wander around doing whatever the heck we want with no cares whatsoever for the impact of our actions.
What about your words have you ever thought that they could be doing more damage than anything?

Plenty of people believe in that afterlife.

Many people enjoy life living it under the guidance of their religion. They don't need or want someone else telling them they are wasting their time just because atheists enjoy pushing their world view on everyone.
Well, is it OK to be going around telling people they are going to hell?

I was at the cemetery one day attending my husband's grave. There was a child's funeral 4 sites over. The sermon wasn't about hope and faith, it was about sin and hell. At a time when these parents needed comfort and loving words from their pastor, he choose to turn it into a scared straight session.

If my words do damage to the idea that Christians are by default superior to those of any other belief system, theistic or not, then I don't see that as a net negative.

Oh that's awful. When our daughter died, my father, who is a practitioner of Native American spirituality, performed the service, more for his own sake than ours, honestly.... what little I remember (between crushing grief and 100+ degree weather. ) was the focus on how even such a brief life was able to bring together families, etc etc. I thought that was a nice little ray of brightness in an otherwise icky thing.

I have spoken with a *lot* of other parents who have suffered through prenatal/neonatal death and the only "positive" religious references have *still* been guilt laden.. like "God picked the precious flower and brought him/her home early", frequently interpreted by the (christian) parents as "We are not worthy as parents".

There isn't MUCH except time which can heal the ache from losing a child, I think, but spirituality doesn't seem to really speed that experience along. I think what DOES speed it along is community. The religion (whichever flavor) appears to do more harm, no matter what the intentions (with some exceptions, granted, but certainly not when it's used like in the example Maryjane cites!).

Well...

Quote:
“And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, / Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.”...So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray you, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.
Maybe you could be put to work "sustaining" random men. That would be a meaningful way to spend the rest of your life...

OK since invited I will. All you atheist corpse lovers, keep it to yourselves because us Christians on here, don't want to hear about it.
I don't intend to stop posting, cover your ears. My dead corpse's picture is on my profile. If the thought of that makes you queasy, you might want to stay off it.

I'm not one to step and fetch. Guess I'll stick with self gratification.

Yes, and both sides attempt to use their definition as the true one.

If your attending a funeral for a christian family are you going to keep quiet about your opinions or in an ideal world would you like to give them your opinion?

I actually think there is a relationship between religion and a person's personality. However, it isn't as simple as "Christians are better" or visa versa.

Generally the kindest smart people I know are Christians. The most cynically people are Atheists (not bad people). However the worst people are the ones who take Christianity as a social event or something their parents did.

I've always found that Atheists seem to have a cynical edge compared to Christians. Not a bad thing, just a difference in personality.

I thought gela was talking about morals. As for truth, well, we can't tell who's right.

Of course I'm not going to express what I feel happens to someone after their death... especially at a funeral! It's down right rude and I didn't enjoy it when people felt the need to do it to me. If they want to believe that death is a beautiful thing, let them. It comforts them and grief is all about comforting the survivors.

When my husband died, the religious didn't have a problem serving up their platitudes. My personal favorites "he's in a better place" and "it was god's plan" made me want to vomit. They got to go back to their cushy little lives and forget that every single day we woke up without him.

They never once considered that neither my husband, our children, or I shared their beliefs. They just assumed. Their preconcieved notions (like yours) of what it means to be a non believer would have caused more trouble than it was worth. I do have to live in this world and interact with them.

When I come here to debate on R&P it's because I'm incensed that because the majority feel one way, I'm supposed to agree with them. Freedom of and from religion Helio. It that really so damn hard to understand?

Amnon, this is a debate site, not a chat room. Move on.
