Using my Moh's Hardness example, science states that there is no harder mineral than diamond on Earth. The person claiming to possess a mineral harder than diamond feels attacked by such a statement when in reality, the statement is merely the culmination of scientific evidence up to that point. Science, though, is not attacked by the person claiming to possess the mineral harder than diamond because there is no proof of such a mineral's existence.

It's a common attack method. You make up an example of X person trying to use a belief instead of a fact in a given situation. Then you use that as case in point for religion being a load of crap. I think its atheists who feel more attacked, since its your "camp" so to speak that makes up extreme examples such as using faith to fix a car. Had anyone tried to every tell you to pray for your broken car? Then why the need to continually bring up the subject. The mind forgets but the heart always remembers -Anon

Here's a good example of a believer attempting to challenge an atheist and the outcome. The Great Tantra Challenge The Forum Rules Radical Atheist A man who does not think for himself does not think at all...Oscar Wilde

| Hucking Fuskies Location: Conn Posts: 1,886 | It happens all the time. The simple fact people place belief in something not testable by science is somehow threatening because many of your comrades (not specifically you) will use extreme example to show when faith attempts to take the place of sound science. Those extreme examples are then universally applied by atheists as to why in your view it is follow to hold beliefs. The mind forgets but the heart always remembers -Anon |

| It's simply logical Location: San Diego Posts: 4,118 | . It's the other way around, Helio... The simple fact people place belief in something that contradicts ancient religious dogma is somehow threatening to the majority who have blind faith in that dogma, and who therefore feel compelled to attack and condemn those people and, whenever possible, shun them from being equal participants in their own society. In a debate forum, you are going to get opposing responses simply because a thread is there. It doesn't matter what you are talking about. You could say "I like cheese" and you would have a slew of posts convincing you why are are wrong. In a non-argumentative setting, you could state something like "things happen for a reason" when you find a $10 bill in the street and I am standing nearby. Regardless of whether I knew you or not, I would not make any comment about your statement. You can believe whatever you want in that non-argumentative setting and not be challenged on it. On the same note, if you had said "black people are stupid," I wouldn't challenge you either. The only time I respond is in a debate forum setting or when one of your "beliefs" threatens something in my physical world. If your belief that evolution is an attack on creationism causes local school curriculum to change then I consider that open season to take your belief position down and make you look as unintelligent and hypocritical as possible in the process so as to make it more difficult for your position to have real world effects in the future. | |

![]() Igneous Magma Posts: 278 | I think part of the consequence of this new Christianity is that the religion as a whole will eventually wither away (as Hell has been instrumental to Christian thinking for centuries, and sudden dropping of pivotal concepts to a belief set in accordance with a shift in attitude is quite damaging to the security of an ideology) or become only nominally a religion (like Humanistic Judaism). Ohh no, you mean the religious leaders who have done such a good job of taking money from the poor and keeping them in fear while they fund things like the crusaids where peoples intestines were pulled out and set afire while they were still alive to gain controll through fear are going to lose that controll of how "Christians" think now after all this time and abuse,,, how trajic it would be for some people to break free from the mind slavery theyre under, we can't have that!! |
