the perfect atheist

i wonder, and this question doesn't only apply to christianity, if you follow most of the basic teachings (like thou shalt not kill, not praying X number of times a day) and live your life as a wholesome person, what would your after life/ reincarnation/ whatever else could happen after you die, be like?

i specified the christian comment because for most catholics at least its straight to hell if you dont follow christ, but if your part of a different religion, think differently, or are hellbent on sending us all to hell, post your opinion and why you think thats gonna happen.

He's asking whether the perfect atheist goes to heaven or hell.

The answer is, I don't know, but I think good intentions are the most importent thing (going against the common saying).

Don't forget this is all in good fun!

Since I don't believe anything happens after we die, then my answer would have to be nothing. We die.

That makes it all the more important that we contribute something positive to our society and our existence while we have the chance, because we live on after death through those we've taught and the contributions we've made.

So yeah, this thread will end as a fundi vs atheist thread since the answer depends on the reliability of religions. It sounds a little too much like ''How to get in heaven when you die'' (in misc) too.

actually i'm hoping to get different religions point of view on the subject, thats why i inserted the "doesn't only apply to christians" remark, hopeing it'll at least give room for some honest debate before the fundie battle begins

and please, i hate that "how to get to heaven" thread, it was just a guy telling you how to get to heaven

(step 1, accept christ)
(step 2......nope, thats about all there is to it)

at least mine is in the form of a question and asking for responses instead of just a statement telling you "this is how you get into heaven"

please, dont compare

Then why on earth did you name this thread "The Perfect Atheist"????

Because the perfect atheist answer is; there is no God, there is no Heaven, there is no Hell and we don't go ANYWHERE when we die but to our grave. The End.

Are you talking of the perfect atheist or the absolute atheist? What's being a perfect atheist?

i dont care what the perfect atheist thinks, its whats true, and i'm assuming there is a god, he doesn't know that, he's just good because he likes being nice. and doesn't believe in heaven or hell. but where would he go when he dies.

the god that does exist just so happens to be the god of whoever is posting at the time, so lets say your beliefs are 100% true, where whould he go.

the perfect atheist is the atheist that doesn't sin, doesn't commit crimes, and is all around nice to everyone.

I'm Catholic and would like to clarify some preconceived notions that people may have about our beliefs. Many may think that Catholics condemn all other religions directly to Hell and we are "right" and everyone else is "wrong". This is untrue. We believe that if a person is a "good" person and follows whatever religion they know, then they will get to heaven. (Words are in quotes because they are very subjective terms and open to many meanings) So, in terms of your question I believe that your "perfect" atheist would go to heaven.

Hi,people there.
You are debating about whether someone goes to hell or heaven. But fistly, have you guys ever think about whether hell or heaven does exist?Well, honestly, I doubts about it. I do not know if there is hell or heaven. I wish they does exist, so that I can experience more in wherever it is hell or heaven.
To be honest, I do not care about going to heaven or hell after my death, if the places do exist. What I care about is what I do in this turn of life is good or bad to our world and people and whether I ever help somebody out of some kind of suffering. I want to give as much help and love as I can do in my this turn of life. I just do not care about hell or heaven and Jesus Christ. I just prefer to do someting that I think is right rather that wondering about whether Jesus Christ or Budha likes me or not.
I used to dislike Christian and Jesus just because Jesus Christ says that if I do not trust me I will sent you to hell. Welll, I say, based on what you tell me, I know you want to scare me into trusting you and you go to my hell which I set just for you.

Believe yourself when nobody does.

We're running under the assumption that he wanted a Theistic point of view on his topic.

Fine. Have it your way.

However there are different angles on this one, ranging from all atheists burn in hell, to Dante's inferno's "benevolent atheists exist in a nice hell" and then us wacko's Christians (or regular old theists in your book, lull) who say intent is far more importent then belief.

Why? Just because that is the best way to judge morality is intension. Also because, it just seems right (please, that wasn't an actual argument, just me.)

Faith must be matched with good works. This is the part of Catholicism I like.

Nah, can't even find perfection there. Even the biggest jerk has at least one redeeming quality, though it may take years to find it.

First off, why would an atheist pray x number of times a day? Who would they pray to? Darwin? No. If you pray, you're really not an atheist.

Second, why would an Atheist wonder or worry about what was going to happen after they die? They believe that your "soul" is just your higher consciousness, controlled by electrical and chemical impulses in the brain that cease when you die just like everything else.

That puts you in the minority. I went to Catholic school from k-6, was forced by my mom to continue going to church every Sunday for years after that, and still have a very Catholic family. I was taught by my parents, my elementary school teachers, and the priests at the church that accepting Jesus Christ as the son of God, accepting that Mary, the virgin mother of Jesus, and accepting God as the father and the holy spirit were all necessary if you didn't want to burn in Hell for all eternity.

I first got skeptical because I realized I only believed this because I was raised to, and that there are billions of people raised to believe otherwise, and so they WOULD believe otherwise and, according to the beliefs I was brought up on, end up in Hell.

Then I realized that biblically speaking, there is no Hell. There is simply a lack of existence for those that don't follow the rules and that the concept of Hell was created by Catholics, probably so they could try to convert Buddhists since Buddhists TRY to die and go nowhere.
