Finding Philosophy -- a short autobiographical essay by Colin McGinn, published in Prospect Magazine

A few things that caught my eye:

People bought philosophy to life for him.
Philosophy is abstract (non-local). It deals with "every object - physical or nonphysical - in every possible universe"
Philosophers are pre-occupied with technique -- style is a vital, and largely learned skill.
