"Nothing to live or die for"

I don't understand Lennon. If there is nothing to live or die for then what is the meaning of life?

Life has no meaning. You just try your best to be as happy as possible for as long as possible and then you die. It's that simple. :)

I live and would die for democracy. It is incomprehensible to me to to enjoy life without such a sense of meaning.

I'm not suicidal, that's too painful and final. So I'm stuck here until accident or old age claims me. In the meantime, I try to amuse myself.

The John Lennon song, "Imagine", was a response to all of the violence and wars fought in the name of religion. England and Northern Ireland have had a terrorist-style war between Protestants and Catholics like forever. This turmoil has spawned a lot of great songs over the years by many different groups, including U2, the Cranberries, and Sinead O'Connor.

Leaving a wife and children behind (some of which we know he loved), I bet he wishes he could take those words back.

I wonder:

Did he die for NOTHING?

My faith is stirred but never shaken.

I'm the proof that evolution works...

You're the proof that it doesn't.

If I had a button, I'd push it!

Can I push yours?

Whatever Lennon meant from his core of heart by saying "Nothing to live or die for" it is absolutely true that "Everybody lives basically for himselfn only". As regards death, I do not that think anybody till now has seen his own death. So, one dies for others not for himself. I feel he continues to live and live and live only; sometimes with body as cover and sometimes without body cover !!!

By the way, what it means democracy to you ???

I am sure you cannot love democracy more than your own life. When your life does not remain or, you dot not exist to watch, what good of that democracy or anything else to exist for you !!!

The ONLY thing worth living and dying for are your OWN values.

Assuming you all are talking about John Lennons song, IMAGINE, he never said "Nothing to live or die for"

That refrain goes like this.....
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
Source

So instead of having spearate countries and religions, he's imagining a world where the entire planet is united as one. The song is refering to an ultimate Socialist planet. Not Socialist by the Communist standard, but rather a more peaceful standard.

Personally, I think this would take centuries to acheive through education. The biggest hurdel is greed and the need for power. We will never see it in our life time. :(

What a second! If there is nothing to kill or die for then doesn't that mean there is nothing to live for?

Not when you take the entire song into context. But the refrain I quoted should be enough to explain the context of that verse.

It's not a new message: "Give Peace a Chance" — we're not being unreasonable, just saying, "Give it a chance." With "Imagine," we're saying, "Can you imagine a world without countries or religions?" It's the same message over and over. And it's positive.[6]

Yeah that's what I was going to say.... he was basically saying none of the above to kill or die for, therefore nothing to kill or die for.... just live the life where you help out your fellow human and better yourself through time. The more you do for humanity, the more you're noticed. The more noticed you are, the more you're down in the history books and people will talk about you... the longer you're in the books for your good deeds and what you done for humanity, you basically live forever.

This also works for those who do evil things which people continually talk about, as reminders.

Then again, it's all about interpretation.
