Prayer doesn't work

The mind is a powerful tool. Prayer works in many cass because the people praying BELIEVE it works, and they themselves gain confidence to solve the problem themselves.

My Grandmother always said to "pray for strength, pray for wisdom, but never for material gain"

In other words, pray for what you already have, but don't realize it. Then you can give God credit if you want.

That seems a little rash, don't you think? Telling people to pray and give God credit for the good that follows...

I can see your skeptical of the *actual* premise of the "prayer" so why not admit it? Tell people to gain confidence to solve the problem themselves by believing in themselves, by believing in others, by believing in humanity and Earth and everything else we can rationally function with.

So if someone believes in prayer then it works and when someone does not believe in prayer it does not work.

If you feel like prayer dosen't work for you, maybe you really don't know who your praying too. If the god you think your praying to dosen't answer your prayers, maybe because your not listening to this god's requirements and this god dosen't think it should listen to you or your prayers.WHY SHOULD HE?

So lets assume you know who you're praying too. Lets also assume, you know your gods "requirements", then your god should listen to you, correct?

Would you please pray to your god to stop world hunger, the AIDS epidemic in Africa, Tsunamis, Tornados, Earthquakes, Hurricanes, Birthdefects, and let amputees have their limbs back. Surely these are not requests of someone being selfish. These would appear to be altruistic requests with highly good intentions in the eyes of humanity.

As a Gnostic Christian, I ignore that teaching myself and pray for the health and safety of my friends and family and sometimes others in dire straights.

Okay you know this gods requirements and you pray to him, he is still not going to listen. You have to try to live according to these life requirements for him to even recognize you. I always pray for things you listed, but I know these things happen for a reason and I can't control it. This world is not my home.
