| BANNED Posts: 583 | Are australian poets wowsers What do you think of the view that in Australia erotic poetry is an under represented genre in Australian poetry . In the main erotic poetry in Australia is a form of herasy. Most Australian poetry has been defined within orthodoxies and ideas of tradition and correctness (The Penguin Book of Modern Australian Poetry (1991)). Australian erotic poetry in effect goes against the grain of established ways of writing poetry in Australia -with its traditions, accepted genres and content defined by an orthodox establisment. The establish canons of Australian poetry do not include erotic poetry. There is the Bush ballad tradition, the lanscape tradition, the antipodean tradition of the Britsh tradition, modern poetry, surrealist poetry, guerilla poetry, narrative poetry, collaborative poetry, Vietnam poetry and post-modern poetry;in other words a diverse and unrully canon, but a canon that does not include erotic poetry (The Penguin Book of Modern Australian Poetry (1991)). The Penguin Book of Modern Verse, 1961 and the more recent (The Penguin Book of Modern Australian Poetry (1991)) contain no examples of erotic poetry. The National library of Australia untill quite recently (2006) had no category called "erotic poetry Australian". Colin Leslie Dean IS ONE OF ONLY two poets listed under the subject category "erotic poetry- Australian" in the National Library of Australia catalogue. Colin leslie Dean has twenty seven books of erotic poetry in this subject category He is also the only Australian poet listed on the British library catalogue under the subject catagory "erotic poetry English Australian" For all their attacks on convention and old style poetics Australian poets are, like their Regency, Victorian and Edwardian forebares, still writing for polite society and a sanitized sensibility (The Wordsworh Dictionary of Obscenity and Taboo, 1988). Even though historically Australians have been typecaste as an anti-establishment anti-authoritarianism larrikinism when it comes to erotic poetry in Australia the attitude seems to be that as epitimised by C.J.Denis term wowser. Erotic poetry in Australia is relegated outside the margins of offical poetry and to the realm of the neatherworld- the other side of the black stump. What do think of this view for those interested you can download mr dean's erotic poetry FREE at Gamahucher Press Catalogue |
