It's been said that x% of Americans are nonreligious. Just wondering what that means.

I'm amaized that you of all people would ask that question.

I would conclude, that it would possibly mean:

1) those who do not believe in any form of religious beliefs whether organized or otherwise
2) those who claim to be religious, and don't follow the tennants of their faith in their daily lives
3) those who say they are "---", and perhaps go to the church/temple/mosque maybe once or twice a year
4) those who go to their church/temple/mosque all the time, just to puff themselves up and take on the aire of superiority
