Rare King James Bible sent to auction after discovery in Victoria library

Quote:
A rare first edition King James Bible that languished for decades in a small storage room on the second floor of the downtown library here is now at Sotheby's in Manhattan, where it just might fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction in June.
Quote:
How high the bidding could go on the tome, believed to be one of only 50 such books in the world, is up for grabs. The renowned auction house - which reduced its commission rate because it was so keen to auction the book - expects to start with a $40,000 US reserve bid.
I think it would be kind interesting to read a much older version of the bible.... perhaps it would be a bit more accurate with less translations and edits.

I once fround a large Greek Bible at a garage sale, but I cannot translate it so I do not know what it said. A Bible written in Greek or Hebrew is concidered the most trustworthy but it takes time to learn how to properly translate the words into their English counter-parts. I got $100.00 for that book and thought I was high rolling money wise. But the thing with most book collectors is getting a copy that is as close to a first edition as possible, the more ancent to better. But age is not always important, some old books are worth little or nothing, Last weekend I found a classic book "Ivanhoe" published in 1903. But only put a ten dollar price on it.

When the fellow wins the bid the book will not be read, fear of damage, it will be put in a class case for display purposes and for "bragging rights". Later on he might try to re-sell it for more money, as an investment.

Interesting. I would expect it to be the same as other King James versions.

I think a Greek bible would be a better find. Do you know if it was orthox Greek? That, to me, would be more valuable.

I think it would be as well.

Further, if you look at the history of the different translations, you will see that the King James is a somewhat buggy translation of the already buggy Vulgate translation. Some of the other English translations, such as the NIV, use older texts from the original Greek and Hebrew. However most other English translations are derivative of the King James.
