You're taking it a little too literally, I think. I am addressing the idea that, while our fallen nature means that we cannot be considered good no matter how many good things we do, when our nature merges with that of Christ and when our stain has been removed and we make ourselves transparent for Him, then we can be light. Then the things that we do turn the tide against evil in the world. Suffering can make a person stronger and better if they are that kind of person, but there is very much an existence of pointless suffering.

I've seen people who've had lots of suffering and not turned out better.
