I didn't know that. What is the history behind that?

Well, I wasn't entirely sure of the history, so I looked it up:

Perhaps it was to establish a more Catholic stance of the first Catholics in the American colony of Maryland, who had conflicts with the Protestants. Then again, this happened years after colonization, but I suppose anti-Papist tensions were still about. That is, choosing any other saint might be viewed as obscure or something like that.
