Athena I believe the beginning of religion begins with revelation and the inner awakening of the human spirit. Reason comes in with the unfortunate justification of humans for selfish purposes, and control issues in social hierarchy. Reason is not always bad, but from the human perspective the inner awakening, and the compathic (Compathy - compassion without reward, personal benifit or purpose. People seek a reason for their belief and involvement.) unselfish nature of human nature lies at the root of revelation, and reason must follow. If reason is first and justifies compassion, and therefore religion, human relationships are selective and justified (empathy - cause and effect, and reason become the determiners for compassionate relationships, and emotion desires reward and just returns for those relationships.ie I am sad when your sad and I am angry when your angry.). When emotion rules and justifies reason, and fear guards the gate than sympathetic relationships rule over reason, and we have the worst possibly expression of human nature.
