| Skeptic of Skeptics Location: Bristol/Plymouth Posts: 219 | Will religion exist in a thousand years? Will religion exist in a thousand years? Current trends show otherwise... [Insert lots of stats] I personally think relgion will be with us forever. Many people accept that they only have one life and if subconsciencely submitting to a belief or a way of life makes them happy for there short stay on this earth then so be it. Id go further than that and say different people have different characteristics based on the way there brain is structured. I can often tell when a person is religious, or likely to be religious than not. Its odd, merely a speculation. Please note, I dont hold this to be evident truth, just a feeling. I also think that everyone conforms to there local society just to be happy and fit in. While many may not consciencely agree with this, I would think it is true for the most part - even if they do say they disagree with conformity and say they dont practice it. Were all victims to collective thinking. Its called culture. Given my odd, rather distant postulations, I would tend to think that religion will be with us forever... What are your thoughts? And for the OP.. I sure hope not. Religion is a dangerous thing that teaches kids to have unshakable faith in their beliefs and gives them the courage to kill. It weakens the value of human life and progress. Powerful.. magical.. e-e-e-eevil.. | |

| Igneous Magma Posts: 568 | I think it very definately depends on whether medical science ever reaches the point where humans don't have to worry about dying. A better question might be, "do you think medical science will ever be able to stop the normal aging process?" Given 1000 more years of research, I think that may actually be plausable. Then again, if we are really creatures created by a supreme who designed us to be finite, maybe not. |

In terms of belief in God, there's basically two axes: strength of belief (ranging from agnostic to gnostic) and actual belief (ranging from atheist to theist). Agnostic atheist (also known as weak atheist) denotes a moderate position. Generally, agnostic atheists make the claim "I lack belief that there is a God" (the (strong) atheist's claim is "God does not exist"; the theist's claim is "God does exist"). | |

The way we're going, there won't be any humans left to form societies in 1000 years. We have for all intents and purposes made the conflict in Iraq a religious war, we've pissed off several nations with or with access to nuclear weapons, we've alienated many former allies, terrorism has become a threat we seem to be unable to defend against without sacrificing the very freedoms that set us apart from our enemies. We are divided as a country as to which way to go next. Fear has become the latest motivation for our foreign and domestic policy. The more afraid we become of foreigners, the easier it will become to hate them. Eventually, and sadly sooner than later, someone will 'nuke someone and our presence here will come to an end. No more humanity, no more religion. The Forum Rules Radical Atheist Heathen Queer Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be. (Ashleigh Brilliant) |

| Molten Ash Posts: 138 | !000 years is no problem for religion. It's been with us since the d@wn of civilisation and is no way going to die suddenly, of cardiac arrest or in an car accident. I hope it will go, of a mataphysical natural (ist) death but would predict a timescale of 15000years. G*dness will be punishing us for a long time yet. It's natures way of assf us for ever beleiving in the first place. But in the end man will prove greater than g:eek:d,. As we have gone from polytheism to monotheism, we'll go from monotheism to Nonotheism. |

| Agnostic, Cynic Location: New York Posts: 285 | My personal opinion is that if humans are around 1000 years from now, religion my be an underground society, the majority of the population will not care about god or heaven and hell. On the other hand something catastrophic could happen to the human race and radical beleivers could take over or peoples faith are stimulated to beleive in a god, or that disaster could just wipe humans off Earth and then we will really see if there is a god or not. |

| don't care Location: NY Posts: 267 | I think the Earth will be gone in 50 years. Screw 1,000. I honestly wish there was a god to keep us in check, but no...there isn't. Religion will always be here, no knowledge will ever change it. ALl people will do is keep making changes in the literalness of the bible. ex: The Earth started 6,000 years ago says the bible. My rabbi: "a year then could've meant millions of years". Religious people will just keep modifying religion like the words on a telephone. I'm just a fool caught in the rat race of life (Nathan Struth) please help me solve world hunger, It's hard to do it alone. |

Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. -- Song 8:6 |

![]() Made of pure win. Posts: 3,807 | Set your way-back machine to the year 1006, find an average person and tell them the following: In 1000 years... ... People will have walked on the moon. ... Average people will carry small objects in their pockets that allow them to communicate with anyone on the planet. ... Average people will by able to travel by flying. ... Educating will be available to everyone including women. ... There are two more continents to the west that Europe hasn't discovered yet. ... We'll have the ability to burn entire cities in moments. ... Wars will be fought with machines. Point being that it's nigh impossible to predict what's going to happen in 1000 years. Society before the industrial revolution changed VERY slowly. Change is now nearly exponential. Will religion be around in 1000 years? I certainly hope not. It's bad enough in 2006 we're still enslaved to bronze age propaganda. |
