The Unitarian Universalist church does not have religious dogma. Their central beliefs revolve around the idea of a free and independent search for truth and meaning, and the interconnectedness of life. There are UUs who are atheist, deist (including myself), pagan, Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, and a variety of other belief systems.

However, the origins of both the Unitarian and Universalist aspects of the church are in Christian Universalism, and Deism. Hellfire-touting baptists would certainly be allowed to join the church, but they would not find anyone who shares their beliefs.
An atheist attending church? whaa? seems like a waste of an afternoon to me. Although, you could say that your independentness and connectedness is dogma.

I think that would be stretching it. Also, I meant interdependentness, not independentness.

But...

The UU church is a great place for philosophical discussion and social activism. I took a class there in mediation, for example. It is a great place for family activity, meeting people, discussing philosophy, getting your brain around new concepts, learning cool stuff, getting involved in community activities - all that sort of stuff.

So it's more of a community than an actual religion?

I would not call it a religion at all.

Some UU's will disagree, and call it a liberal and very inclusive religion.

To me, though, it is a community, not a religion.

I am Christian, that's it, I don't belong to a certain religion, because to me most organized religion is just a big business, wanting money and time, an if you don't cough it up, your looked upon as "unfaithful." I just interpret the bible my way the best I can and learn from it. Other religions are fine as long as their missionaries don't come to my door at dinner time.

How about if all missionaries just stop going to any doors, at any time?

Yeah that would be great, because most people that have beliefs arent changed by missionaries, they just interrupt. One missionary told me I was the wrong religion and would be damned to hell if the true church wasnt my church.

Could we get them declared game animals, so if they get within range we could kill them and eat them?
On a side note, does anyone have any recipes for missionary? All I know is that you need a big iron cauldron and firewood.

If we ate the missionaries BEFORE they torture us with their rhetoric, are we still carnivores? I mean we stopped the suffering of those whom would have heard their rhetoric. Stoppping the suffering of others should qualify, on some level, as a vegetarian. Therefore entrance to heaven. Unless you are agnostic, which means you may unnecesarily go to the hospital, cuz it's free? Right?

Ahhh I love it when missionaries come to the door.

1.) What is your religious affiliation,

Atheist

2.) Why

I see no reason to accept the assumption of a God as true. Were I to find myself believing in a higher power, I would likely not belong to any one particular religion as they are unable to support their faith with proof (thus it being faith).

3.) What conclusions have you come to about your own religion.

Not a religion but what the hell...
I believe in the possibility of a 'soul' but my ideas on it are not fully fleshed out and I've encountered contradictions and unsupported assumptions in trying to make it make sense. It is in its infancy stage and the mortality rate for new ideas of mine is high.

I've looked into both Buddhism and Satanism (Laveyan) to see if they appealed to me and while I agreed with many of their philosophies, I am neither a Satanist nor a Buddhist.

4.) Do you accept other ones? Why?

I accept other philosophies and I tolerate other faiths. I am immensely interested in the Christian faith and attend church, read my Bibles, and study it as often as I can. It is an interesting hobby. ^^ But accept their God(s)? No.

I have much speculation on the nature of the soul, and how it would interface with the brain, if you ever wish to have a one-on-one discussion of this topic.

Many missionaries, aside from their obvious conversion purpose, provide the only education and aid in some parts of the world. They function much like charities, sometimes.

Pretty sure he's not in favor of cannibalism, nor wholesale slaughter of relatively harmless missionaries. I hate when people don't get sarcasm.

I use the categories 'theist,' 'atheist,' and 'antitheist' personally, but that would equate me with what one may a soft atheist.
