    2 + 2 = 5

Is it ever possible for this statement to be true?

For extremely large values of two, yes.

Yes because it's just a symbol. Imagine, if you will, that we designated the symbol for four fingers to be 5 and the symbol for five fingers to be 4, you wouldn't know that it was strange. In fact you would think it was natural.

All our symbols is based on consensus.

So do you think that the concepts of 2 and 5 have any bearing on the things to which they refer?

It is easily possible, right now.

Suppose the 2's and the 5 you discuss are on your tax forms.

Now suppose that the 2's are rounded down(from 2.30 and 2.21), since that is what you earn, and the 5 (which is actually a 4.51) is rounded up since it is what you owe, and now you have reality + unjust government.

It is described like this to be correct....

    2 + 2 (divided by unjust government) = 5

You just left out the part in parenthesis.

I'll stop being a smartass now.

Yes, and Big Brother is watching you.

Humans as a culture generally define 2+2=4 for the sake of usefulness.

But technically you can define anything you want to be true in your own mind.

That doesn't mean you'll get anyone to agree with you.

Yes and when you have 12 good people to agree you have fact and once you have that your opinion becomes a true fact.

“A mother tells her infant, that two and two make four, the child remembers the proposition, and is able to count four to all the purposes of life, till the course of his education brings him among philosophers, who fright him from his former knowledge by telling him that four is a certain aggregate of unites; that all numbers being only the repetition of an unite, which, though not a number itself, is the parent, root, or original of all number, four is the denomination assigned to a certain number of such repetitions. The only danger is, lest, when he first hears theses dreadful sounds, the pupil should run away; if he has but the courage to stay till the conclusion, he will find that, when speculation has done its worst, two and two still make four.”

    - Samuel Johnson, The Idler, No. 36. Saturday, 23 December 1758.

    Good ol' no-nonsense Samuel Johnson.

If I could “see those Ancients, who were most renowned for their Wit and Learning” like Lemuel Gulliver in his account of Glubbdubdrib on his Voyage to Laputa in Gulliver’s Travels, or meet the great personages of history (e.g., Julius Caesar, Jesus Christ, etc.), I would forsake them all for but one hour’s conversation with Samuel Johnson.
