| Open the cages! Posts: 1,774 | Just found these simple cat tubes on google. Look like carpeted cement tubes. ![]() "FREE ME", song video by Goldfinger "Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." --Albert Einstein |

Yes StrongHeartsWin, what I am carpeting is concrete tubes, because they're very strong, and uniform. I want to stay away from making boxes, because they have to be built from flat pieces. Anything circular only needs to be cut into lengths. Death to Videodrome! Long live The New flesh! |

| Open the cages! Posts: 1,774 | Hmmmm... I don`t know if I like that idea. Small kids, thinking a cat will be happy inside, are bound to shove the cat inside, close the lids, not tell mommy and forget about it, leading to cat deaths. At least, the lids should have a number of quarter size holes drilled in them to allow for this more than likely possibility. | Molten Ash Posts: 25 | ![]() I have a Gytrash for a dog - he is a Newfoundland and big as a bear! He’s quite sagacious, but very independent-minded, and not the least bit interested in pleasing me or anyone else. If he decides, for example, that he wants to go in one direction, and I in another, he will come to a stop, and no amount of tugging on his leash will budge him. We have been together for more than nine years and had many disagreements, but have finally come to an understanding: he does whatever he wants, and I let him do it. Now we get along just fine. |

I've been thinking about this, and possibly I could hinge a doorway to swing open. Somehow lace it, like shoelaces. I don't know how hard it would be to put some metal rings to keep the holes from fraying. But, the difficult part might be the latch. If I used string to just tie the door closed, a cat would continually open the door. Death to Videodrome! Long live The New flesh! | |

| Skeptical Patriot Posts: 7,746 | The food tray was just a ferinstance. I'm really not wild about it. I think there would be cleanup issues or making the entire tube system smell nasty. A separate module at one end of a tube, perhaps, with a disposable pan as a floor. Not a day goes by that I don't see something that reinforces my belief that people are idiots. |

![]() Son of X51 Location: San Diego Posts: 3,780 | An attached bowl never crossed my mind. I was thinking of some kind of trap door where a container of food would be stored at the base of the unit. It would have to be at least 1-1/2 foot high. When you said "tray" I was just picturing a trap door about two inches high that could be used to place small items like brushes or something small like that. That's an awesome idea scribbler, I'm just not sure how I would latch the door closed. Death to Videodrome! Long live The New flesh! |

| Skeptical Patriot Posts: 7,746 | I like the idea of soft plastic for the door, like the material they make clear carpet runners from, with a weak magnet as a latch. The cat can easily push it open and it latches automatically. It lets in light as well. Not a day goes by that I don't see something that reinforces my belief that people are idiots. |

| Skeptical Patriot Posts: 7,746 | The "Help Compugasm create the ultimate cat habitat" thread. Damn. We ARE a "think tank" aren't we? Actually, that was an idea I was going to submit to the administrator, but I lost interest. Not a day goes by that I don't see something that reinforces my belief that people are idiots. |

![]() Son of X51 Location: San Diego Posts: 3,780 | I think Isherwood also mentioned coming up with a way to stabilize these tubes, without having to prop them up with people furniture. Thanks to some math by Kamehameha34, I have devised a "Sisal Pyramid". ![]() Made of wooden dowls, bound in sisal rope, a tube fits through the center. And being equalateral triangles, it's very strong, and never upside down. Friction keeps the tube from rolling along the floor. The next problem is: Considering the possible carpet colors, fiber choices, arrangement of my tubes. There is no way to physically build every combination, and take a real photo of it. Yet, I still have to somehow show the possibilities. I'll have to come up with some illustrations, until I can suppliment with real photos as things get made. I'd like to know if this diagram makes sense? ![]() It's a bit cartoony, so I'll have to work on that. But any suggestions would be appreciated. Death to Videodrome! Long live The New flesh! |

| Principled Observer Location: Toledo, Ohio Posts: 13,873 | I don't have much to add, except that if you want to increase the artistic and personal value, you could look into picking up a "Bluejackets Manual", US Navy publication, found at most "surplus" stores. Lots of information on decorative rope-work, coxcombing and basic instructions for boatswains linework. That could be applied to sell pre-fabricated rope assemblies that can be easily attached by the purchaser, and also provide decorative highlights allowing infinite personalization. It would also be another great use of hemp in our market if you used hemp rope. There are probably better specialized books on the topic, but the Navy Manual is where I was exposed to it for the first time. | Iceberg Location: Connecticut Posts: 5,703 | We share custody with my daughter's dog, Hannah. She is a prime example of the Yorshire Terrier breed. We also take care of Vishnu the cat. He is the typical male Maine coon cat. He wanders the hundreds of acres outback but is fairly lazy for a cat. He doesn't even eat what he catches. I have had cats who literally eat off the land and only ate the kibble when the hunting was sparse. Now to my question: Is it really true that our calendar year is 7 years for a dog? And just how does one determine this? Ask the dog? Brien the Iceberg If you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything. M.T. |
