New Year

Well, I know not everyone considers today the first day of the New Year, but for those who do, how about giving us a thought about the year past and the new year, or have you given thought to a New Year's resolution?

I can't find the Rose Parade on TV! I like to watch the ball drop in New York, at mid night, and the next day, I like to watch the Rose Parade. Last night I heard California could have a rainy New Years day, and that it is very rare for the New Year's parade to be rained on. It was to happen reguardless of rain. Maybe I turned on the TV too late? All I can find is foot ball.

When I heard there could be flooding in California, I felt smuggly safe, because I in Oregon, not California. However, people have been talking of the rising rivers, and last night it was announced a home repair store is giving away free sand bags. I guess some of my neighbors could be starting the New Year with healthy exercise and prayers. There have been a few predictions of a cleansing, a flooding, from astrology to native Americans, and Pat Robertson said Kutrina was a cleansing. We might speculate about how much cleaning will be done. :)

After checking in with everyone, I think I will celebrate this day by putting away Christmas decorations and cleaning. You know, get the New Year off with a clean start. I also hope bad feelings of the past, stay in the past, and we can avoid stepping on each others toes in the future.

Here we've had an eclectic mix of snow, rain and beautiful sunshine.

On TV at this very minute is the New Year's address of Switzerland's new president (the members of the federal cabinet take turns being president, one year at a time).
This year it's Moritz Leuenberger, a preacher's son from Zurich. Unlike last year's stuffy pres, Leuenberger has a sense of humour. On the evening news they showed him goofing around on the set trying on different ties. It took them over four hours to get satisfactory takes of three five-minute addresses: one in German, one in French, and one in Italian. "That's federalism", as the Swiss say.

What an interesting way of determining who is president. Like wow, what are a presidents duties? Should they be commanders and chiefs, or more like the a club president presiding over meetings where power is shared more equallly?

This is Switzerland, land of coalition governments, political compromise and cabinet "collégialité" (there are four political parties represented in the seven-member federal cabinet). The president is head of state much as Queen Elizabeth or the president of Germany, say: signs things into law, makes state visits, etc. Only here, he or she is also a serving cabinet member, so there's quite a workload involved in being both at once.

Due to a long-standing rule that the Rose Bowl parade would never take place on a Sunday, it will be held tomorrow, Monday. It will most likely be rained upon.

Mucho rain. I turned it off. The little rose peddles were washing off. The rain was heavy. Is this a harbinger of things to come in '06?
