Echelon expert Mike Frost, who spent 20 years as a spy for the Canadian equivalent of the National Security Agency, told "60 Minutes" that the agency was monitoring "everything from data transfers to cell phones to portable phones to baby monitors to ATMs."
Well, then, since we know the 9/11 terrorists communicated by cell phone and other electronic means, either NSA doesn't listen to everything, or else they knew about the attack in advance. Which do you prefer?

In addition, Echelon works like a vacuum, it sucks in everything, which is then sorted through. You've presented no evidence that citizens in this country were ever specifically targetted, or that the information was ever used. Bush himself has admitting targetting domestic communications.

I wonder why, GBA, you have posted the same article twice?

Could you not have simply posted a link to the other thread you made? Now people are discussing this article in two different thread, needlessly.

Society may be formed so as to exist without crime, without poverty, […] no obstacle whatsoever intervenes at this moment except ignorance to prevent such a state of society.

Seems other republicans,(like that closet case Ken Mehlman) just can't help giving Democrats advice on how they should run their Party........just like his opinions, your's are neither in the interest of the Democratic Party, nor are they of any interest to Democrats.........anywhere!

the interesting thing here is that while we see our favorite stooges repeating the same nonsense they always say - the dems won most of the elections this past election cycle.. and even though bloomberg's a "republican", he's nothing like the sort of retard who's our current president (or his equally retarded apologists). and, the historical norm is that the party of the sitting president usually loses seats during mid-term elections..

hope for america...

"I have merely voiced my dissatisfaction at virtually every one of his policies. You name it, Bush has screwed it up: job outsourcing, the war, the economy, the environment, the national debt, the budget deficits, illegal immigration, the massive new and redundant government agency, his attacks on the Bill of Rights, his view on torture, his expressed view on the Constitution, his appointment of an AG that views the Geneva conventions as "quaint", his no-bid contracts to corporate buddies, his secret prisons, American citizens thrown into military jails and denied the most basic rights, the list goes on and on."

I assume that most people who oppose Bush do so for similar reasons. Why don't you give us a list of what you consider his major accomplishments?
You have not listed reasons, you have listed assertions.

Job outsourcing – pre dates Bush by a long time
The economy – 4% growth
National Debt – not created by Bush, what action by Bush has affected this?
Budget deficit – Since when does a president pass an appropriations bill?
Illegal Immigration – No policy change
View on torture – Define torture and provide a source for “his view”
His view on the Constitution – provide sources for his “view”, not anecdotal insinuation based on an offhanded jest.

You assert “You name it, Bush has screwed it up”. You offer no reason for this assertion.

And what does any of this have to do with the blind lemming, lock-step, Kool-Aid gargling repetitious drone of the “Bush Lied”, “Bush Spied”, Bush should be tried” chorus that I addressed at the beginning of this thread? Nothing. But it’s a lot easier for you to move away from that and make assertions then to address the issue.

I, for one, oppose some of Bush's policies, such as the Prescritpion Drug benefit, as being money ill spent with little to no control nor incentive to save.

I oppose some aspects of No Child Left Behind as wasteful spending in an already bloated education system.

And I opposde the mindless mewling of the "Bush is the root of all Evil" crowd so bent on discrediting everything Bush does that they are willing to call the war in Iraq "illegal", ignoring the facts of the matter, thereby heartening our enemies while endangering our soldiers.

Of all written only this to dispute... Not Bad.

It most certainly does not hearten our troops, and puts no better light on their efforts to rid Iraq of the tyranny and oppression they have endured.

Don't hurt yourself patting your own back. I just chose not to address the entire post.
I'm a Vietnam vet. Among those I served with, we couldn't have cared less what the "folks back home" thought about the war. We were a little busy trying to keep our asses in one piece. And later, when I did have time to relect back, I realized my service was in defense of the right for my fellow citizens to say what they thought of our government, one way or the other, without fear of reprisal or censure.

Had the Democrats shut the hell up, not brought out Murtha and tried to push up Sheenhan or been against the war, they would have gained a few seats in 2006.
Wait a minute there chief... What year do you think it is now?

Since the opinion seems to be that god already knows what's going to happen, maybe "he" told GBA what was to come.

Either that, or he just stepped out of the cockpit of his Delorean supplied with 1.21 gigawatts of power for the flux capacitor, just back from his trip to 2008.

They've lost seats in 2006, it's a given.
You can't talk like traitors, declare wars and battle lost, make false accusations against the President on a daily basis and stop the Patriot Act when we need it without being seen as untrustworthy an weak.
If they shut the hell up, they might have picked up seats in 2006, now they will lose seats for sure.

Granted we are in 2005, but I am referring to the 2006 elections. They've already lost.

Yeah but you speak as if its now 2008.

You don't know if they are going to win or not yet. Back in Summer 2004 did you know before hand that Dems would lose seats?

Chris, maybe you could tell us now why they did lose seats and why they are even lower in the polls than the Republicans. Clinton did not get in with a majority did he? 43%
Ross Perot got him in, remember? Give us your prediction of 2008. To run with flakes like Gore and Kerry was purely nuts, can you agree?

Why they lost seats... maybe the repubs and Bush amped up the scaremongering (i.e. the terrorism alert level going up to orange ... or was it red?) anyway, they convinced people that they needed to elect republicans to further Bush's agenda. You can't honestly say that you know for sure repubs are going to win again in 06. You cant honestly say that repubs are going to win in 08 either.

Bush can't be elected but who is to say his sagging poll numbers aren't going to rub off onto the next R candidate? Kerry got 56M votes remember?

With the question of Bush remaining in office much longer, and hopefully a closer look at Cheney as well, it could be a long time before Republicans get back into office. It is all about the media pleasing the public, when we went to war and now. If the media comes in on Bush and Cheney as I think they can, it will be a shark feeding frenzy and Republicans will have a hard time getting seats.

The way things are going with Bush, one can only hope we have free and independent elections in 2008.
