(Alluminium Foil Deflector Beanie) Me and my freind tried wearing them one day in 8th grade, the teacher tried to make us take them off, but we said that the signals from the mothership were too strong, he left us alone after that. I know your type. You think, "I'll just get me a costume, rip off the neighborhood kids." Next thing you know, you've got a jet shaped like a skull with lasers on the front! -The Monarch |

One language (English in this case) takes a handy word used by another (here Hindi, I guess, or Sanskrit) and starts using it in its original meaning. If it catches on, you can be sure that soon its meaning will bend and people (most of whom don't have much imagination) will be wearing it out to cover everything -- It has now achieved the status of cliché. My pet-peeve-of-the-moment (or rather one of hundreds) is "window of opportunity" to mean, simply, opportunity. It's a kind of lazy verbosity. To save us all trouble, here's hit-parade of clichés I strung together for another thread: Scrib, I think it's time you stopped bitching, got ahead of the learning curve and took on board a roadmap for a level playing field. Without such a sea change, we could have a whole new ballgame as we approach the endgame. In which case it would be the tail wagging the dog, and any U-turn at that juncture would really be over the top. The bottom line is that a paradigm shift such as this calls for a reality check: the sooner you see that there's no free lunch, the less risk you'll run of scoring an own goal. So concrete steps have to be taken to throw a lifeline to the grassroots. In the final analysis, it is the only way of achieving closure at this particular point in time. Excess verbiage does not equal a superior intelligence (translation: fancy talk don't mean you're smart.:)) I especially like, "at this particular point in time" = "now". Now my head hurts. Not a day goes by that I don't see something that reinforces my belief that people are idiots.

Yes, Scrib, "litmus test" is another one. As if the brainless utterer of this cliché means anything more than "test". "I wish I was as cocksure of anything as Tom Macaulay is of everything." -- Viscount Melbourne
