Spam getting weird

I kid you not, I received this in an email (spam) today:
Quote:
I KOFI ANNAN, secretary-general of the united nations, would like to ask your partnership in reprofilling funds over $250m in excess ,the funds would be coming via a string of selected banks in Europe and Asia.

The funds in question were generated by me during the oil for food program in Iraq.

I have been getting scandals/ controversy in this regards, you can read more on the links below-

http://www.*****/anna-a05.shtml
http://www.*****/main042803.htm
(Addresses altered for obvious reasons)

You would be paid 5% as your management fee. please do not write back directly to me via my official email address as all further correspondence should be sent to my private mail box. As soon as you indicate your interest i will give further details, remember to treat this mail and transaction as strictly confidential. I will wait to get your urgent correspondence via my private mail box-

KOFI ANNAN,
SECRETARY- GENERAL
kofiannan005@*****.com
I keep alternating between being amazed that someone thought this would work and laughing my ass off.

Snicker.

Sad thing is that there may be some confused old folks that would fall for that. Some people get so confused that they don't realize what a predatory world surrounds them...

No one with any brains would fall for any of these African scams ("Hello, I am the widow of the late Mobutu Sese Seko blablabla..."). But they must be thriving enough to keep the variations coming.

That said, Kofi Annan and oil-for-food is amusingly edgy. :)

Such is the nature of spam. Send out 5 million emails and get 20 hits you make a pretty good return.

I know someone online who talks to these "African widows" and waits until he picks out a lot of contradictions, then hits them with them. Lately instead of being widows, they claim they're American citizens stranded in Africa. He was chatting with one of them on Yahoo(lol) and they gave two different states they were from. When he confronted them with the contradiction they got angry.

I get those all the time.

Maybe I shouldn't have responded to one of them with "Go to hell you moron scammer." I think it encouraged them.

I thought the title of this thread was "Spawn". I was thinking "Hell yeah, Isherwood, Spawn kicks ass!". But I see that it has nothing to do with Spawn.

That aside, I don't get spam anymore. I have a GMail account and I have gotten ZERO spam since I signed up. I don't know what the hell Google is doing to keep the spammers away, but I like it.
