in school do you believe everything you are told?

i dont know about you guys, most of you seem very intelligent(not picking sides, on both you seem to know what you are talking about), so back in school(or currently) did you take in everything your techer's told you as a fact? or did you check for yourself, tell the teacher he/she is lying, or maybe other things?

i'll start off:

all through out school, all of the trouble i have gotten in is for insubordination, basically i challenge authority when i dont believe they are right, now im not saying i am always right, but if i dont trust m teacher i wont let them get away with giving me lies as facts, now this subject also goes into biases in school, some people dont care, they suck in everything the teacher said, gets the good grade in class, doesnt do anything if they have a feeling about something being fishy, but i do not get good grades, and i get in trouble alot, if i dont like something i outwardly challenge it, which is probably the dumbest thing i could do....

your turn

I was just like you, when I was in school. One thing I've learned though, people don't usually lie about issues. More often than not, they're looking through the prism of their world view, and repeating their opinions as facts. In other words, raw data has to be interpreted in order to be understood. Teachers are just relating their understanding of the facts...

I always gave the examiners in school what they want. Always followed the rules. Always had very good grades. Did I believe everything I was told? No. But why argue with the teachers? :)

arguing is one of my purest forms of pleasure, not with my friends, but with people above me, like my parents or teachers...

ok, lets get back on topic... so, with politics, if your teacher clearly states one side is wrong, obvoiusly leaning toward the other, do you just take it and leave it at that?

I'm gonna be a Junior next year, and I still get in trouble for stuff like that. But I ususally listen believe what people say unless they've given me a reason not to and not to trust them. But of course I believed everything my parents told me when I was little, but once I got older I noticed that they messed up sometimes and weren't always right, when I was.

The same with my teachers now. Like, this past year I got sent out practically every day because I had lost my respect for my English teacher. She messed up grading a paper of mine, used incorrect grammar at times, and couldn't spell to save her life. And I can spell almost anything just hearing it, and I have a thing for grammar, so...

Anyway, I hope I was one of those "very intelligent" ones Cheesenuggett was talking about!:)

totally, i mean, we may not look at things the same way, but you are still smart...

im a freshman, but last year in 8th grade i was sent out for lack of respect for rediculous teching and abuse of power of my band teacher(i quit by the end of the year). she obviously had developed that i was evil and hated everything i did towards the end, so i just gave up..

And I assume you're smart, but I try not to assume too much. You know what they say, "when you assume, you make an ass out of you and me..."

I want to see how smart you are. I need to find a way to test people on the spot as a way to rate their intellect...:)

Of course. What's the point of arguing? The classroom ain't Volconvo, ya know.

How about this for a starter. Try to see if the person claims to know more than they actually do. Try to see if that person is the kind that is very common these days that confuses ignorance with knowledge. Look at the person’s claims and ask yourself that if the shoe were on the other foot would they believe what they are arguing based on their own argument. Take a close look at just how intellectually honest the person is. Because if you are not at least honest with yourself then it will be far too easy to think you know things that you really do not know at all.

By those tests how well do you think you would do?

ive only taken one IQ test, and im not sure if it is true, i dont really trust the less intuitive tests, 15 minutes to tell someone how much they know doesnt seem right

i took one and got 115
my friend took another, and ive always felt we are pretty even intelligence-wise and he got 150 or something(10 points less then einstein :\)

Did school make me rich?
No.

Did school give me plenty of hot women?
No (it was a boys school).

What reason do I have to put my faith in school?

i dont really trust IQ tests @ moustache, i dont feel they are intuitive enough, and if you look at the majority of online tests they are almost all lies...
