| Igneous Magma Location: Jacksonville, Florida Posts: 373 | Ghosts! I think "ghost" is a loaded word, but that's what I'm talking about -- energetic, ethereal beings. Who has had experiences with these critters? Anything scary? Funny? Who hasn't had experiences with them, but believes they may exist? Why do you believe that? This is a thread about ghosts -- not about materialism... so I don't want to hear it Gorgo and Starboy 8) |

| Retired Posts: 7,312 | There was a ghost of some sort in my friend's apartment. I stayed over there once, by myself, and the TV came on by itself, with just 'snow'. I assumed the cat stepped on the remote or something, so I put it on top of the TV and went back to bed. It came on again. Same thing, just snow. OK, I thought, it's some kind of static electricity or something, so I unplugged it. Believe me, don't, I don't care, the damn thing came on again! I had read about polterieists, and that many are harmless and just like to fool around and that you can talk to them. So I said to the living room area 'please don't turn that on anymore, I have to get some sleep before I go to work tomorrow'! I was prepared to leave if it or anything else happened again, but it didn't and I went to sleep. Never there again, but that night nothing happened. My friend said that never happened to her, but that she thought her cat played with a ghost in there. She would run around after something, wild-eyed. I have that cat now, and she does that wherever we've lived, so I don't know. I do know about the TV, though. That was real, but surprisingly I wasn't that scared. I figured if it wanted to hurt me it wouldn't bother playing with the TV! Another friend had one that opened his cabinets, laundry room door, and shower curtain while he was asleep or at work. He started making a note of how everything was to be sure he didn't just remember wrong. But almost every morning or afternoon, things he had closed were open. Me, I would have moved if something like that was continuous. "...with like-minded people one cannot discuss. | Igneous Magma Posts: 257 | I have seen and delt with many varityies of "ghosts" or as I prefer to call them spirits. They are everywhere and if you listen really carefully they can get into your mind and you hear yourself thinking something you have never thought before and wonder who said it. Then the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. I have found you must accept them or your life isn't going to be a fun one. If you have a request of them they may do as you say or not. Most of htem I have found are kind and helpful. This is a little wierd I know... but ya ever feal like someone is helping ya out? Like you really need help with someone and you don't know where your strength came from... them... |

| Hot Lava Posts: 1,153 | When I was in the 8th grade I decided to see once and for all if ghosts exist. I figured the best way to find a ghost was to go where the ghosts were. I went to a local cemetery. It was in up state New York and went back to before the Revolutionary War. Very old graves/tombstones. Also a wonderful colonial church (since burned down :( ). I took my sleeping bag out there and slept on top of a grave. I put my head right up against the tombstone. Results? No ghosts, but the place was spooky when the moon came out and the white tombstones seemed to glow in the dark. I hope that there are ghosts, but I'm going to have to see one to believe it. Next time I'll try to sleep in an old battlefield. Last edited by Logjam; May 11, 2005 at 02:21 pm. |

| It's my life Location: Texas Posts: 532 | I have never had any experiences with ghosts, but I know people that have and I love to read ghost stories! My boyfriend, one of his friend's and several members of his family have claimed to have had paranormal experiences before. I've never been around any of them when this has happened. But his mother and aunt both claim to have spoken with thier dead mother, seen the ghost of a little boy and other entities in the past and the two of them love the Ouija board. Not me! James and his friend Freddie both claimed to see the ghost of some guy one night. There's this place around here called "The Hill", it's just this woodsy, hilly type terrain that is dotted with oil wells. Some oil/gas company is always drilling. Well anyway, at the summit of "The Hill" is an oil rig and some weekend nights the guys like to drive thier trucks up there and drink/party. Once upon a time near where that oil rig is standing there used to be an old barn where the young men from generations passed would go up there and fight chickens, get drunk, fight, someone would get hurt, stabbed, shot, whatever. Anyways, according to *legend* some guy got killed up there in a fight over money he bet on a chicken fight and his ghost is supposed to still roam around up there. So Freddie claims one night while he and James were up there that he seen the ghost like just materialize and start walking towards them. James said he had his back to it and he seen Freddie just staring off at something and before he could turn around he felt something just walk past him, he felt like this cold breeze and out of the corner of his eye he seen this guy just walk right past him, go a little distance forward and just dissapear. He said every nerve in him was tingling and the hair on the back of his neck did literally stand on end. Neverless, he and Freddie jumped in Freddie's truck and made haste back towards civilization. I think some people are more intune with the spirits than others. I personally feel that I have such a deeprooted fear of seeing ghosts or whatever that is why I don't . I've heard a saying before that if a person really and truly is afraid of seeing a spirit then they wont appear to that person. Almost like the person is sending off some kind of energy that the ghost can't tap into. Just fine with me! As for roaming around cemetaries at night, hell no! ![]() If you want the country to go to hell in a handbasket, then vote for the one who can drive you there blindfolded. |

| Igneous Magma Location: Jacksonville, Florida Posts: 373 | I'd to hear some theories on what they actually are. Everyone must not become a ghost, because we'd be overflowing with ghosts -- billions and billions of them. They don't seem to have many common threads either. Some seem happy, others sad, others want something, some are mean, etc -- just like people. So what are they, and why are they here? |

| Pragmatist Location: UK London Posts: 1,979 | There are hundreds of theories of what ghosts actually are but if you want some of the more common ones then here goes. 1) they are echos of another plane of existence similar to ours that exists out of phase on top of our plane but in certain places that 'anchor' the planes together some bleed across does occur between the planes creating weird effects every so often. 2) they actually are the souls of people who have died but have found a non corporeal matrix to survive in which supports at least the essential parts of their energy pattern. 3) they are alive people who are asleep and have managed to astral travel in their sleep to another part of the planet in their dreams and interact and leave when they waken without ever realising it. With several billion people on the planet it would take only 1000 of 1 percent being able to do this to provide the myth of ghosts. You can explain ghosts anyway through just about any mechanism - byproducts of our technology we dont understand - natural phenomena combining in ways we dont know about or the best one - true malevolent spirits for real from a plane of demons which no one can defend against but my gut instinct says its number three....well maybe two and three. I wouldn't recommend sex, drugs and insanity for everyone, but its always worked for me. Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime." (Ernest Hemingway) |

| Igneous Magma Location: Northeastern, USA Posts: 606 | I have seen and communicated with "ghosts" in my past. It occured primarily when I was a youngster coming to grips with a few losses. I believed, therefore they existed.(for me) Very similar to the lonely child having an imaginary friend, it is a defense mechanism of sorts. I know I was not making it up at the time(consciously). I also know now it was a psychological thing. The human mind/psyche is fascinating. Ghosts are figments of the imagination in most cases or the result of the power of suggestion. Electrical and electromagnetic interferences can account for many spooky places as well in as far as causing us to see or feel what we may interpret as a ghost or a presence. This has been reproduced in the laboratory. |
