hello. I call myself Weasel (favorite animal) and I hail from the State of Texas. I consider the study of history and the lessons it teaches us my passion and hobby. I also read a great deal for I love a good book.

I will stand upon the age of 17 in about two weeks which probably makes me one the youngest members here. Although I enjoy debate, I still have a great deal of improvement to make in terms of postulating my arguements and making sound, logical deductions. It is my hope that my interaction with this group will provide the neccessary practice needed.

I am also a firm believer in discipline. There are those who rule and those who must serve; this is the way it has and probabaly always will be (one of the constants in history). As such, I find myself disgusted with those who complain (hmmm.....John Kerry.....) and do not offer a better alternative than the status quo.

I am also a LCMS Lutheran and as such I cannot in good conscience consider myself anything but a republican. That being said, I would also like to thank rcne for allowing me membership.

Heh. i think you have wandered into a topic/thread that was formerly an intro for a conservatives caucus here on Volconvo. There are other more universal intro threads... Try the sticky ones in the General Forum...

What the hell's a capetonian??

I didn't realize the conservative forum threads are still out there.

I am happy to have a forum member from SA, and looking forward to some comments on various international subjects from you...

ethinicity in south africa is a huge discussion on its own.. racial classifications in the time of apartheid was very specific, confusing and at times degrading. We had more than 10 classifications of race.

i would have been classified then as a 'Cape Malay'. Meaning my origins are from Malaysia. Although i have no resemblance whatsoever to malaysians!
I was then classified as coloured - then all coloureds were known as black. and right now im just south african :) and proudly so.

why i was classified as malay, well, thats another long story.

Didn't Malays 'discover' Madagascar and people bits of the African coast to the west of Madagascar?

The world is such an ethnically diverse place, and for longer than we would have thought. There are places in Malaysia (Malacca) where people still do Portuguese folk dancing and display other signs of being "Portuguese".

The wife of my colleague Chris grew up in Cape Town. Sounds pretty spectacular.

Try the "Getting to know you" thread down in Off-topic, Annie. This-here thread is a flash-in-the-pan that will sink as mysteriously and swiftly as it rose.

My user name is Technosoul which is a nickname I started to use at a chat place called Spiritweb. They are no longer on line.

It posted at the Wanderers forum and at the Oprah forum before ending up here, been posting ideas starting back in the late 1980s. And had two of my own webpages before Yahoo gobbled up Geocities.

In the early days I was a right wing Christian but during the '60s I was transformed into a "tree hugger" if you know what I mean. That segwayed into New Ager concepts and writers. As a hobby I explored para-normal things, different religions of the world ( and of the past), and philosophy.

My first webpage was called "Paranomal Perspectives" which title might give you a clue about me. My second webpage was created for me as a surprise Chirstmas present by some girls who had kept all my poems and saying and then created a webpage containing them, things I had posted at the Wanderers Forum. They are no longer on line.

I never cared much about politics until Bush Jr ran for that office. And then I went on the attack (word wise) after finding out things from a left wing radio station - a listener supported media. I am mainly a Democrat but am currently unhappy about some of their leadership. So I switched to being a independant and have posted enough about my views not to do so here.

In my non-computer world I am interested in recorded music (historical). I do not attend nor do I belong to any established relgion. So of freelance religion.
I am retired but have worked at many low-income jobs in the past. I presently buy and sell antiques and collectable items ( as a self-supporting hobby). I live in a small town two blocks from a large lake and three blocks from a national forest. I like nature. Only have a high schoool education and a few years at a photography school. Have been married to one person since the 1960s with two grown children. Pets = three cool cats. Watch nearly no TV except for an hour or two of news. Not into sports. I advocate alternative thinking and thinking for yourself. Use meditation as a resource.
Music wise I like the oldies but goodies, the classic rock of the 60s, punk rock of the 1990s. Don't care much for middle of the road pop, country and western, jazz or classical music. I enjoy blues music and Memphis rockabilly songs also.

In other words - I am retired and I know everything and have lots of time to tell you all about it. Oh yeah - I like to joke around a lot and so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

PS - I am into the Blue. White Male with English and Irish forefathers/mothers.

My favoret writers or speakers - Black Elk. Terrence McKenna. Ram Dass.
Martin King Jr. Jesus. Zecharia Sitchin. Book of Tao. Carl Jung. Buddha. Alan Watts. Roy Masters. and all the "classic" fictional books. Yoko and John Lennon. To mention a few.

Another Alan Watts fan here. I have a copy of every one of his books. He was the writer who helped me see that Christianity wasn't the best explanation for the reality I saw all around me. Watts' essays on the TAO are among the best I've ever read.

Finally, a fellow Blues fan! Do you listen to Tom Waits? How about the classics from the 20's-60's such as Howlin' Wolf and Robert Johnson?

Also, could you recommend me some Blues bands if you like? I'm actually relatively quite new to the genre.

---------------------------------------------------
Anyways, about me as a "person", since I just realised I haven't really represented mysefl as one on this site very well in the past: I grew up in Cork, a seaside town. I love good food better than sex and/or beautiful women and will probably become fat eventually some day due to this. I have an abnormally large beard for a 19 year old that I like to collect and store things in for later retrieval. Recently, though, my beard did not survive an unfortunate midnight raid from my college roommates, and I am currently trying to plan my revenge(any advice or suggestions are welcome).

Back to food though: food is half my life(I'll get to the other half later). I love all foods be it Japanese, your typical Southern fare(nothing better than a PROPER country fried steak or fried gator tails), Indian(usually your average curry), Middle Eastern(Hummus and seasoned meats in paticular), Thai(peanut sauce!), and just about anything else running the gamut from exotic fruits to microwave dinners. The only thing I really can't stand is Hungry Man dinners- those things seem to have been sculpted within the bowels of hell, because they taste and smell like Sulfur to me. My favorite dish of all is spicy crab sushi, and just about any other kind in general. If you want to make a lifetime friend, just treat me to a nice sushi resturaunt and you'll have a friend in me forever.

Now, the other half of my life is history- specifically, digging it up either through folklore or culture. I am studying anthropology and linguistics, and am loving every minute of it. I'm not sure which region I want to specilaise in(if at all), because I want to see and learn about them all- every culture, every myth, every historical story. I derive great joy from holding ancient artifacts in my hands, because it gives me a feeling I just can't find elsewhere- somewhat like a feeling of celebrating in one's smallness really. Regardless, I love digging, and talking to people with different perspectives, and language. If you have any of those sorts of things to show me or think you have a further insight to give me concerning them, feel free to PM- nay, you MUST pm me- I'll listen, even if my usual formal style of writing that I use here and in most forums when "being intellectual" won't show it very well.

Lastly, the rest of my life revolves around books and music- I can't get enough of either. Thus far I have read Fantasy/Sci-Fi, Romance(the guilt and feeling of dirtiness afterwards was overwhelming), History, Philosophy, Pop-Trash(The Da Vinci Code SUCKED), and even some less specific fiction such as the Master and Commander series, the James A. Michenr series, and whatnot.

Music is an intimate experience for me- I do not like seperating myself from my music. When listening to songs, I feel it is best to lose yourself in them for a moment in time. That said, I like any music I can "connect" to- this extends to some old-school country, folk, blues, techno, reggae, "easy" acoustics, rock(punk, emo, alternative- doesn't matter)- in other words, just about anything other than rap/pop-country and it's other shallow counterparts that don't even attempt to pull me in at all.

Me as a personality- I am somewhat reserved, and have a disjointed way of speaking with people. I like to play with small things in my immediate surrounding and refuse to clip my fingernails or other such garbage because I feel doing so is a waste of time. Most people describe me as "Eccentric", even though I don't view myself that way and just think we all are individuals. I detest people who wear shirts with dumb slogans on them on first sight- do NOT wear slogan shirts around me. I like to play with theories, and sometimes when I'm bored you can find me concocting huge lies and telling them to total strangers(don't worry, I'm not lying to you).

That's about it about me as a person, really. I know, sort of boring, but give me a break as I've only been around in this world 1/5th of the time some of you folks around here have :)

Zink if you like the blues, try Smokin' Joe Kubek, BB King, or one of my favorites, Alvin Youngblood Hart.

Do you like Bonnie Raitt?

How about Buddy Guy?

If you like Stevie Ray Vaughan, you're gonna like Chris Duarte. Those guys are SMOKIN!

For something raw try Son Seals.

How about Gary Moore?

If you want some laffs listen to Hound Dog Taylor. His stuff is ridiculously distorted but cool...

One I discovered a while back is an American Indian band called Indigenous.

Edit: And I don't know why, but I just thought of Professor Longhair
