| Leibniz Posts: 286 | Favorite Linux Distro What is it...I know this can be a hard question for many people. For me it is an impossible one because I like to play with them all. But I will say I am most comfortable with a Debian based distro. So I guess if I were not playing with the distro but actually using it I'd go with Ubuntu for ease of use and because its Debian based. Plus it works well with compiz-fusion! (I actually uses xubuntu). "...all life is an experiment. Every year, if not every day, we have to wager our salvation upon some prophecy based upon imperfect knowledge." -Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr |

I think my next distro was Mandrake, then SUSE. I was late adopting Ubuntu & other 'untu's. When someone tells me a distro is aimed at those new to Linux I tend to ignore it. For instance, I installed, played with and uninstalled Lindows (later Linspire) all in one day. The exception to that would be Mandrake/Mandriva. I really liked that OS for a while. Last year I had a 500GB drive partitioned to hold 10 distros, switching back and forth whenever I got bored or had to update. That turned into a fiasco, trying to remember where I'd put this file or that image. These days my desktop hosts a 350GB drive for Vista (uggh) and a 500GB drive for Kubuntu. Unfortunately I can't dualboot my newest laptop as the wireless driver hasn't been ported to Linux yet (according to the VP of AMD who looked at it when I took it to the Google/KDE event in January.) My older laptop dualboots XP Pro and SUSE 10.3. Kubuntu is a decent, solid and dependable OS. I'm happy with it. But I'm similar. Part of the reason I use linux is because its fun and because I don't have to use only one (really expensive) os. I even use FreeBSD at times but don't like it as much. I like a challenge, but I don't have enough hair to tear out to attempt to deal with those difficult distros. If I were running a server, then I'd slap BSD on it. But for everyday computing it's too much work. Computers were meant to make us more productive, not more frustrated. I failed to mention PCLos. That's a very nice distro based on Mandriva and uses RPM for packages. It's very up-to-date. Texstar is the sole maintainer, so the distro reflects his interest in the latest and greatest versions of all the available apps. P.S. I considered having a common /home partition, but since in some cases I was reviewing the distros for Lockergnome, I wanted to make sure I was treating each as a fully separate OS...except for the swap file. | Wake up, Mr. Freeman Location: Auburn, Maine Posts: 516 | I've used Linux for a year or so now, and I've been using Fedora Core the whole time. I haven't had a chance to try out FC9 yet, but I will this Monday or shortly thereafter. I'll also look into Debian as well (not Ubuntu, actual Debian). Supposedly the file system hierarchy is more structured and consistent, according to my grandfather (he introduced me to Linux initially). I like my distro to be easy to use, but not a Windows clone that treats me like a baby. I'll also have Vista solely for DX10 gaming soon.
