Gay Marriage in CA

California's top court legalizes gay marriage - Yahoo! News
Quote:
SAN FRANCISCO - California's Supreme Court declared gay couples in the nation's biggest state can marry — a monumental but perhaps short-lived victory for the gay rights movement Thursday that was greeted with tears, hugs, kisses and at least one instant proposal of matrimony.
Quote:
Same-sex couples could tie the knot in as little as a month. But the window could close soon after — religious and social conservatives are pressing to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in November that would undo the Supreme Court ruling and ban gay marriage.
Well, I'm happy for right now, but I have the feeling that this ballot is going to be passed and that John McCain is going to get elected.

Why does the state of California need to be marrying anyone, if you're not religious or anything, you're just choosing to be monogamous.

A child has a toy, but isn't playing with it. You take away the toy, and all of a sudden the child wants it very badly.

Not sure what the analogy means, but I think it might agree with me.

It's not that there is a very strong need to get married, it's more a factor of resentment and injustice that the right to marry would be taken away in the first place.

Not to mention it does make a relationship feel more valid to get married, I'm sure, not actually having experienced it myself.

Please, how does signing a piece of paper that means literally nothing and will likely be revoked mean anything more than a truly committed relationship. If you are religious, I can see where the church or whatever you go to's rituals might be meaningful, but state marriage is a joke.

Obviously there are people that feel otherwise, myself included.

There are all kinds of tax purposes and such to a marriage are there not?

Here's one I never thought about...

Quote:
If our partners are arrested, we can be compelled to testify against them or provide evidence against them, which legally married couples are not forced to do. In court cases, a partner's testimony can be simply ruled irrelevant as heresay by a hostile judge, having no more weight in law than the testimony of a complete stranger. If a partner is jailed or imprisoned, visitation rights by the partner can, in most cases, can be denied on the whim of a hostile family and the cooperation of a homophobic judge, unrestrained by any law or precedent. Conjugal visits, a well-established right of heterosexual married couples in some settings, are simply not available to gay couples. Is this fair?

Exactly, which is why there should just be a union of some sort, no ceremony offered by the state or anything. If the only purpose you can think of is legal, then it shouldn't take it's name from a ceremony that has been historically religious and cultural in totality.

I just saw those headlines a few days ago in all our local newspapers.

California is a state that does not wait for some federal approval to get things done.

We now honor gay marrages with all equalities afforded to the mainstream. We made smoking pot a legal medical treatment in spite of federal laws that make it taboo. We opened our doors to immigration, we have stronger polution standards then what the the Fed have mandated. We have opened up more wildlife reservations, and have activated a stonger economical status then most other countries. This is perhaps one of the most consitutional states in the union.

This state is the home for "something's happening".
