Good sources of information?

I was hoping we could share where we get our information, which news channels/shows, websites or other, for any serious topic, be it philosophy, news, world issues, science.. etc?

Also if you provide a recommendation, a brief description or your own assessment of that recommendation's strengths and weaknesses would be appreciated.

Heh, I used to list Volconvo among sites I would recommnd for current information, and valid sources, but the liars have driven off most of the good contemporary news contributors.

Well, I'll start by offering C-SPAN.org. Talk about contemporary.

If I'm trying to prove a point, I tend to turn to LexisNexis or Jstor.

What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?

Al Jazeera is bookmarked right next to CNN in my Firefox. The idea is that reality is somewhere between them.

If I want general information, honestly, I go straight to Wikipedia. Everybody hates it but the hyperlinked bibliography at the end of every page is just too useful not to use. Its also free, searchable, and you can view old versions of a page.

There's also a bunch of specialized websites for weird things I need a lot. OpenSecrets.org is useful for making points about government corruption, and Urbandictionary.com is the shizzle for when your homies use phrases like bloody dragon or ginga.

Destroying America one Volconvo post at a time.

Religious controversies are always productive of more acrimony and irreconcilable hatreds than those which spring from any other cause.

Those are all sources I like. Wikipedia has really come a long way since it was first introduced. As you mentioned, the citations are great for finding out a lot of different info and resources.

I like forums for info. There are usually a lot of different ideas and theories floating around, and often people will post articles and ebooks etc.

I used to like Digg a lot, but there's so much bias and stupid stuff that goes on over there that I've lost interest.

Does anybody here use Google Directory? It's a pretty neat way to find info sorted into categories. There are usually sections with famous works available online.

The free education section has some really cool stuff:

Skeptic's Dictionary.

A useful reference tool on all things sceptical.

For News: I just click on CNN (TV) and they normally cover things okay, they have a lot of staff, pundants, opinionated people, and they are getting away from just qucikie sound bites and allowing for complete speeches, or more in depth reporting.

Then I like to check in with Democracy Now webpage as they cover tons of things no other news source mentions, they are prone show items of interest to the lift wingers and different protest groups.

Democracy Now! | Radio and TV News

I like be a reporter with my own spin on the current events, but Volconvo staff prevented me from doing that here at the breaking news forum because of new rules about parroting the other bias news sources.

For most other topics I use a search engine on my computer and then check out whatever webpages pop up as sources of information. That works pretty well.

Never found Bradley's Lisbeanism Party webpage for some reason. Might have misstyped the address?

Ha.

I used to post at this forum but it is mostly women so I came here to Volconvo to debate.

Oprah Winfrey Forum - Topix
But they had some interesting forums to check out.

I dont have a particular site. Usually I start with Wikipedia. If I can't find what I'm looking for, I just Google it.

Subscribe to and read a major daily newspaper every day. The Internet may be excellent for finding facts, but is vastly less reliable at finding truth.

Google. For everything.

richarddawkins.net has a TON of atheist and scientific articles and videos archived

Um, then there are those databases with peer reviewed shit like galileo (.com?) gale (.com?) and etc but you need passwords.. you can usually get them from schools or maybe even public libraries, I dunno.

I have yahoo as my home page, and while you don't see everything that goes on, they list important events.

It's where I first saw that California legalized gay marriage.

Medicine

I've had this one on my favorite list for a while...

If you ever need to know anything about ICU Critical Care .

It's a bit technical but you can always google what you don't understand.

The BBC is a wonderful place if you like the weird and bizarre. But then the English have a great sense of humour.

CNN is a good source for current events, although the "hard news" is limited and the focus is more on human interest stories. Fox News tends to be more right-wing, but it provides more political news. MSNBC is stand up disguised as news. Chris Matthews was literally drooling while talking about Obama. It was disgusting!

Using the internet for sources of reference is difficult and time consuming but provides the most thorough information. Unfortunately, it is up to the individual to examine the information, check the resources, and determine the validity of every article. Simply stated, there's as much good information on the internet as there is propaganda.
