I dunno aboout progressive, his main idea was a completely agrarian republic where only landowners voted (though at least he wanted most people to be landowners) He also had a kind of funny fear of cities as pits of sin and destruction of republican ideals.

Progressive for his time. And I said he was flawed. He liked bloody revolution a little too much for my tastes, but his ideas on the separation of church and state and public education were ahead of even the other revolutionary politicians of his time. And he was very well rounded in his interests and education. And he knew when it was right to surrender dogmatic ideals and just do what was best. Imperfect but well rounded guy.

His emphasis on bloody revolution was his most realistic quality to me. Plus I don't think many of the english decended founding fathers would have supported a combined church and state system.
