i would definantly say i liked zaphod better in the book and modern movie in the BBC series he acted as if he was trying to gainthe approval of the others with a constant need for attention, in the modern movie he was still an attention seeker but he new he was awesome and he was more laid back and had a rock super star personality, unfourtunatly i saw the movie before i read it so i had my visualisation of the each charicter in my head already, anyone who has not seen the movie or series should definantly read the book first

I believe both versions so far the early eighties series I grew up with in my young teens, and the latest movie are based on Douglas Adams rip
books of the late seventies, the latest movie was ok in parts unfortunately got a bit bogged down with silly politically correct platitudes in parts, as most movies now seem too in some way or another.
The BBC TV series was pretty good, no cgi of course, so modern viewers may look at it with distain, but really good characters well acted, and amusing antidotes in them.'Ford Prefect, Zaphod, Dent, Trill and Marvin are much better acted and characterised in this than the movie, um marvin in the movie, yeah the less said the better.

What do you mean? I kept waiting for him to demand to know where John McClain put his detonators.

The book and my imagination are far more enjoyable than any of the attempts to bring it to the large or small screen.

The radio series is quite good, if a bit dated.

I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

I thought the BBC series did it justice.

The whole series is brilliant and I would totally recommend it. I was introduced to the books through the BBC television series which I though was very good, it is available on DVD and worth watching. As to the film, to say was a disappointment would be an understatement.

Man, this is probably the one and only "Science Fiction" story I truely enjoyed. It is the only set of stories that made me laugh out loud while reading. The books are much better in my opinion, but that is almost always my opinion. Absurdity and sarcasm in a wonderful little package. Who could want more?

Mos Def redefined Ford Prefect for me. I can no longer read the books without imagining him as Ford. (in the past, I had always imagined Eric Idle :) )

i saw the movie before the series and i didnt mind the black ford prefect, especially whenever he did one of the famous beatlegeuse-ian facial expressions, although over all i did like ford better in the series over the movie actor

I was first introduced to the books as "Chapter a Day" on NPR when I was a kid working out in the barn.

I think my favorite is (as usual) the books, but the radio series will hold a special place in my mind.

Quite right. That's how it goes.
Though I wasn't as disappointed by the movie as some. I tried to view it as a new experience rather than trying to make it make it fit with my images from the book.

By the way, I'm currently reading Michael Palin's memoirs. Turns out Douglas Adams and Graham Chapman were great friends as far back as the early 1970s. The cross currents of genius.

Douglas Adams helped write some Monty Python's Flying Circus scripts, under some sort of pen name.

Not from what Palin says.

I no longer recall where I heard that. I'm thinking it was in an article recounting his life, shortly after he died.
