Be afraid: Women or gay men could be behind the wheel of any car Research has revealed that both perform poorly in tasks involving navigation and spatial awareness when compared to heterosexual men. Psychologists at Queen Mary, University of London, who conducted the study, believe the findings mean driving in a strange environment would be more difficult for gay men and women than for straight male motorists. Both tend to rely on local landmarks to get around, and are also slower to take in spatial information.

Yeah, well, so what? The Telegraph article considers one eensy-weensy part of what makes a good driver. But it fails (for example) to consider the testosterone-soaked frenzy so many male drivers lapse into at the slightest provocation (or perceived provocation).

When women started qualifying to become airline pilots, the companies did some pretty serious research in this realm. They discovered that while the average man has slightly better hand-eye coordination (doubtless an evolutionary trait of our role as hunters) women are less likey to panic in an emergency.

I'd rather ride as a passenger in a car driven by a woman. They're much more level-headed.

I agree, Nono. In my experience, the vast majority of reckless drivers, those who race other drivers and those who attempt to evade a car stop by fleeing at high speed have been males (I presume straight since that's not information pertinent to their eventual arrest.)

From my experience woman are the more cautious, but not the best of drivers. Perhaps they are perfect for small country roads, but in New York, their constant stopping at intersections with no red lights or stop signs, slow driving, and insistence on putting on make up while on the road results in a lot of accidents, perhaps not for them but for the person who had to swerve to not hit her, and the other guy the first guy hit. Caution is good, but like everything else, only in moderation.

Men tend to cause more damage in their incidents than women, but have fewer of them. Or so I've been led to believe.

It's not simply men who get into frenzy's behind the wheel of the car. I've been driven around by numerous women who get road rage and competative when driving. The men who've driven me around who get worked up at least have good technique.

I know men who are way more cautious then I am on the road.

Unless you have some statistics or evidence to back it up; don't assume it.

Someone actually got paid to do this study? Every day for months, a team of researchers compiled data, analyzed it, and drew conclusions from their wasted toiling. Q: What job could possibly be more soul crushing? A: The person who had to write the article, about the most banal study ever.

The very idea of gay men and women behind the wheel of a car is preposterous! In fact, I think read somewhere, there is a fabulous set of jeans that prevent women and gay men from having the proper upper body strength to turn the steering wheel to begin with. They couldn't even co-ordinate a proper pants-suit, let alone realize the sun sets in the west.

My personal life experience says otherwise. Can't count the number of times I've had to say "Calm down" to some woman.

Men drive aggressively, on purpose. Women cause accidents......by accident. Also, men have more money. It is simply a good business move. Insurance companies find every reason they can dig up to over charge their customers.

Women try to multi-task while they drive and their minds can't handle the added strain of a cellphone conversation. Look, 9 times outta 10 I can tell if the idiot who just screwed up in front of me is a male or a female. If the car pulls out in front of me, squealing its tires, then it is likely a man. If the car pulls out in front of me, even though there are no cars behind me, and begins driving 3 MPH under the speed limit, then the driver is female (and on the god damn phone).

However, I have no experience to be able to say whether gays are bad drivers or not. However, women are far better drivers then men, just because they arn't as agressive as the opposite sex are by nature. You rarely see women pulled over for speeding. In addition, statistics show that men cause more accidents then women and most of the accidents caused by men result in some sort of injury.

Women can't f*cking drive. They have too many other things on their mind. Studies show that women are always thinking, constantly, often about multiple issues at once. This is what makes them so poor at driving.

It has been my experience that men seem to think they have better spatial orientation, but they'll easily start heading south in an unfamiliar city and swear they're heading north. And on top of that, they won't ask directions or even ask the person sitting next to them in the car with a map. I was once in a car with a man who took us on a 3 hour trip looking for a highway that was 1 block away from our starting point. I exaggerate not.

Men's insurance rates are higher because they are worse drivers, not because they have deep pockets. Sexist and homophobic "studies" come out like this all the time and people no more than look at a headline before making wild proclamations. Reading into it, the study was confined to 140 people of assumedly British citizenship. 140 is a pretty small sample size. That's 35 of each gender/orientation set, if they split it evenly. It is also not a very good indicator on how people in other cultures and experiences would perform. I would think that someone from D.C. would probably drive much differently from a Londoner, for example. Depending upon our experience, we have honed or neglected different driving-relevant skills.

Hey, I'm impartial. Men can be cast in a very bad light. In relative comparison, stating that a women is a poor driver is far less ugly than what could be said of men.

I think it is safe to say that men don't "think" as much as women. This is why men are far more likely to commit crimes. They don't think. This is why men are far more likely to race the guy next to them. Because they don't think.

Women, now they will be thinking about their husband/boyfriend, their bills, housework, children and a litany of other things, almost simultaneously.

By far, the most dangerous drivers are young males, 16-24. The statistics support this.

What I am questioning in this thread is what we mean by "bad drivers". What I am using this terminology to mean is the measuring of actual skill in operating a motor vehicle. My experience and observation over the years leads me to be forced to say it, women can't drive for sh*t. This is a compilation of observation of my mother, ex-girlfriends, ex-wife, friends wives/girlfriends,, and many other females I have witnessed on the road.

I do find it interesting that if I support this thinking, than I am obviously a sexist pig. One fact remains, one of the two genders must be worse than the other at driving, when measured on an overall scale. So to point toward a women, I must be sexist, right? There is no way a person can have this opinion without them being sexist, right?

C'mon people. Sometimes things are what they are, and the denial of such only belittles your own understanding of reality.

This is a perfect example of the double standard I am speaking toward. That is, why do we, as a society, disallow women and minorities to be subject to the same honest retrospect as a white man can be?

The grimacing reality of that Trojan condom commercial is this; For the most part, its true. Young men are pigs. Especially in the setting of a singles bar. They are pigs. Toss Hindus in their also. Also taxi and limo drivers on the highway. I will also toss in old people and people that drive minivans. Also construction workers that drive pickup trucks, they are always driving slow on the road yacking away on the phone. Also toss in Mexicans (especially the illegal one), you know most don't have in insurance are afraid of getting into a costly accident!
