![]() Son of X51 Location: San Diego Posts: 3,781 | Nirvana not good enough to mention? Cool, someone else who knows who they are. My friends band opened up for them in 1993. I remember all the instruments Tea Party had, sitars, bongos, keyboards... I mean it was crazy. I still listen to them. Death to Videodrome! Long live The New flesh! |

| Molten Ash Posts: 44 | I agree that the best drummers are Jazz drummers I really don't listen to Jazz so they won't make my personal top 5. Aside from lars Ulrich I'm surprised no Metal drummers are mentioned. The beats aren't quite as complicated but I enjoy them the most. Joey from Slipknot does some pretty awsome stuff with his kit. |

![]() haha, charade you are Location: Earth Posts: 34 | I am highly disappointed. Not even one mention of Danny Carey of Tool. So sad :(. I agree with Neil Pert. John Bonham was not a good drummer and was no where near the top five greatest...he was just a member of one the greatest bands of all time. Lars Ulrich, sure. and I'd like to add a percussionist who isn't known for playing drums , but has taught many a drummer the complex rhythms of tabla. Aloke Dutta. Just search "Tabla Master" and I'm sure you'll find him :) |

Posts: 900 | I don't want to look like a kind of music elitist, but it's nothing more than plain 4/4 repetitive drumming guys ...Here is what I mean: YouTube - john mclaughlin noonward race from mahavishnu orchestra, the 70's jazz fusion masters along with Weather Report, Miles Davis, Holdsworth ect... Look at the whole video. Pay attention to Cobham's subtle, marvelous, impossible rythmic part as well as the fills and soli. The other members are master of their instrument too... Call me if Grohl or Ulrich can do half as well. I think, I'm free. Last edited by nerdvincent; Jan 5, 2008 at 07:56 pm. |

Portnoy definitely has some cool beats, although I'm tempted to throw Tim "Herb" Alexander in there. | Spiral Out Location: Canada Posts: 510 | I also agree that Lars Ulrich is very overrated... at least on this thread. As for Dave Grohl, also overrated... all he did was flams. Just because the bands are considered good/influential doesn't mean their drummers are top 5 praiseworthy. Top spot for me goes to Danny Carey of Tool. I also agree with Neil Peart making the cut and John Bonham should definitely be up there. Praying for tidal waves. Learn to swim. |

Maybe I'm either misremembering Queen of the Stone Age's drummer, or I simply haven't heard enough of their stuff, but I don't remember him being quite worthy of a top 5 list. I can appreciate a simpler groove applied in the right situation, but ya've gotta be able to play something with character as well. He does appear in Drum! and Modern Drummer (both magazines) frequently, though. "Iron rusts from disuse; water loses its purity from stagnation... even so does inaction sap the vigor of the mind.
