I told you, most of the best drummers are in the jazz style. I only know Peart, Bruford (he plays jazz as well...), Bozzio and Portnoy who can play about as well in the rock genre.

Cool, someone else who knows who they are. My friends band opened up for them in 1993. I remember all the instruments Tea Party had, sitars, bongos, keyboards... I mean it was crazy. I still listen to them.

I agree that the best drummers are Jazz drummers I really don't listen to Jazz so they won't make my personal top 5. Aside from lars Ulrich I'm surprised no Metal drummers are mentioned. The beats aren't quite as complicated but I enjoy them the most.

Joey from Slipknot does some pretty awsome stuff with his kit.

My top 5:

Lars Ulrich - Metallica
Dave Groll - Foo Fighters/Nirvana
John Bonham - Led Zeppelin
Matthew McDonough - Mudvayne
Jeremy Hummel - Breaking Benjamin(former)

I am highly disappointed. Not even one mention of Danny Carey of Tool. So sad :(.

I agree with Neil Pert.

John Bonham was not a good drummer and was no where near the top five greatest...he was just a member of one the greatest bands of all time.

Lars Ulrich, sure.

and I'd like to add a percussionist who isn't known for playing drums , but has taught many a drummer the complex rhythms of tabla.

Aloke Dutta.
Just search "Tabla Master" and I'm sure you'll find him :)

Nothing. They're both great drummers.

I'd agree minus Grohl.

The fact that no one has mentioned Dave Groll of the Foo Fighters / Queens of the Stone Age is nothing short of a crisis. While I don't believe he's the greatest drummer of all time, he's certainly top 5 worthy..
I agree.

I don't want to look like a kind of music elitist, but it's nothing more than plain 4/4 repetitive drumming guys...
Here is what I mean:
YouTube - john mclaughlin noonward race from mahavishnu orchestra, the 70's jazz fusion masters along with Weather Report, Miles Davis, Holdsworth ect...
Look at the whole video. Pay attention to Cobham's subtle, marvelous, impossible rythmic part as well as the fills and soli. The other members are master of their instrument too...
Call me if Grohl or Ulrich can do half as well.

I think, I'm free.

Lars Ulrich is so painfully overrated.

I'm not sure who I'd choose for my top 5, but Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa would without a doubt make my list. Portnoy definitely has some cool beats, although I'm tempted to throw Tim "Herb" Alexander in there.

Herb is so underrated...He's groovy baby! And technical, original... Add Calypool's amazing funky/weird bass and Lalonde's wicked guit...Primus my lads!
*Buddy Rich can enter in the top 5 as well, don't worry...

I also agree that Lars Ulrich is very overrated... at least on this thread. As for Dave Grohl, also overrated... all he did was flams. Just because the bands are considered good/influential doesn't mean their drummers are top 5 praiseworthy.

Top spot for me goes to Danny Carey of Tool. I also agree with Neil Peart making the cut and John Bonham should definitely be up there.

Amen! He's the best drummer I've seen live, although I'm too young to have lived through the beats of any of the early jazz masters like Rich. Muah, I'll be seeing Claypool's new movie, Electric Apricot, tonight and I just found out Les Claypool decided at the last minute that he'll be stopping by to introduce the film (I'm excited!)

Maybe I'm either misremembering Queen of the Stone Age's drummer, or I simply haven't heard enough of their stuff, but I don't remember him being quite worthy of a top 5 list.

While I don't have anything against 4/4 beats, I'm fully with you in that, if someone cannot deviate from something so rudimentary, they're probably not topnotch. I can appreciate a simpler groove applied in the right situation, but ya've gotta be able to play something with character as well.

Hell yes! Tell me about a 5/4 or 8/11 (or even more exotic...) passage here and there...not in Nirvana, don't even think about it. Did you like the video of mahavishnu orchestra?

How about Dave Garibaldi of Tower of Power?
A have a few friends who swear that he's the king, but Tower of Power just doesn't do it for me. He does appear in Drum! and Modern Drummer (both magazines) frequently, though.
