| Igneous Magma Posts: 493 | Tell me a Mermaid Story Mermaid: A legendary sea creature having the head and upper body of a woman and the tail of a fish. Do you believe mermaid and merman existed once upon a time? I believe it maybe just a legendary superstition, but who knows what others believe. If you have any wild stories about mermaids that you like to share here, feel free to do so. Mermaid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |

| Igneous Magma Posts: 354 | never heard of water being a sexual symbol, and their not half water half women, which would be like a female water spirit, their half fish. which have scales and are the farthest thing from sexy. sailors dont have too many choices, the fish/water part wasn't meant to be sexy, just to explain why they would appear in the water where the sailors are stuck in for months if not longer |

| Knower of Nothing Posts: 1,583 | of course they don't exist, that's fantasy. Just like the existance of dragons in many different cultures and eras, we can chalk it up the human psychology. We tend to combine different things to produce similar fantasies. A dragon is a combination of a few different animals. A mermaid is a combination of a man/woman and something least like them - fish. What a piece of work is man! How noble in reason! The paragon of animals! And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust? Man delights not me; no, nor woman neither.. |

| Volcanic Erupter Posts: 4,375 | Nemiroff Psychologically speaking, water is frequently associated with sex. From dream interpretation to chain e-mails, it has proliferated much of history as representing copulation of some kind. The mermaid was originally the same as the siren. Both lured you to your death in the sea. Conceptually, in a place where you were surrounded by something sensual (ocean, lake, river, etc.), the object of sexual release appears to you. To link the women to the water at a time when the idea of "water spirits" was too vague, the women were thought to be fish of some kind. IT'S A BOY!! |

| Igneous Magma Posts: 354 | "The mermaid was originally the same as the siren. Both lured you to your death in the sea." I don't know about the rest of your post as far as the water being sexual, personally I never heard of such a thing, and although the sirens did lead sailors to their death, the mermaids were rumored to actually save sailors who fell overboard. They were like mythological good guys... Most of the time. I'm sure there are a few stories of mermaid attacks, almost sounds funny, but the vast majority of the famous ones are of them helping sailors. Also I saw a discovery episode about dragons that kinda made sense, too off topic, I'll just start another post on that. |

No, I don't believe they ever existed. They are about as senseless a myth as vampires. How about a short story made up by request? It's a sad tale... tail? ... for sure... Quote:

Actually, dragons are quite real. They exist in extreme Southeast Asia. The fire breathing brand may be legendary, but after seeing the flying dragons, and tree climbing, meat eating kangaroos in extreme Northern Australia, I'm willing to give the geologists a little more time to determine if that creature is mythical, or not. | Igneous Magma Posts: 516 | Yo ho, Here's a tale... That's fair and dear to the hearts of those that sail 'Bout a lighthouse keeper and his bare faced wife Who joined together for a different life Yo ho, The winds and water tell the tale My father was the keeper of the Eddystone light He married a mermaid one fine night From this union there came three A porpoise and a porgy and the other one me! Yo ho ho, the wind blows free, Oh, for the life on the rolling sea! Late one night, I was a-trimming of the glim While singing a verse from the evening hymn A voice on the starboard shouted 'Ahoy!' And there was my mother, a-sitting on a buoy. Yo ho ho, the wind blows free, Oh, for the life on the rolling sea! 'Tell me what has become of my children three?' My mother she did asked of me. One was exhibited as a talking fish The other was served on a chafing dish. Yo ho ho, the wind blows free, Oh, for the life on the rolling sea! Then the phosphorous flashed in her seaweed hair. I looked again, and me mother wasn't there A voice came echoing out from the night 'To Hell with the keeper of the Eddystone Light!' Yo ho ho, the wind blows free, Oh, for the life on the rolling sea! Yo ho, Yo ho Yo ho, Yo ho, Yo ho... |
