I've got too many blogs and websites to keep up. With only three or four good friends, my need to "connect" via MySpace is nonexistent. ![]() Natures 'D' Student Posts: 1,214 | I don't do these social networking sites like Myspace and Stickam, but aren't they like online popularity contests? My friends teenage boy visits them and thats what it looked like to me. He has an account on Stickam, which is a webcam live chat service. They even seem to have social groups just like high school. Geeks and "cool" people. The "cool" kids say things in their profile like "If you're fat or ugly DON'T COME IN MY ROOM". Than they sit there all day in the dark (on-cam:confused:) and eat Doritos and curse each other out, all while trying to accrue the largest "Friends list" that they can to show their status. It seems like a twisted option to going outside and/or having real friends. |

I consider all you on this forum "friends" and if I don't want to be bothered with your banal conversations, then I don't log in. ![]() I'd like to thank Charlie Hodge, bringing me scarves and water. |

Why on Earth people wish to get friendly with strangers on the internet, I have no idea. Am I a jerk?

![]() Mass'Debator Posts: 4,724 | I haven't even touched my MySpace site in forever. Too much garbage to play around with to make it look like I want.... that and too many unknown fools try and add me from the oddest places in the world, who I have no connection to. The only thing I play around on now, which is also quite rare, is Facebook. |

If I told my grandmother I was talking to someone named Praxius, she would ask me if you were greek. Then, she would say something like "A greek family used to live next door, and they're ill-mannered. They used to hang their undergarments on the laundry line for the whole neighborhood to see"... something like that. When I was young, we hung out at the mall. But here is a story, about a mall imposing a curfew on kids haning out there. You need identification to be in the mall after 2:30pm. I'm not trying to get off topic about malls and security. My point is, online identity comes without a stigma. Myself, I also don't gather friends on facebook. But communication is totally different for kids today. They debate in forums, create myspace pages, and post video replies to YouTube videos. I'd like to thank Charlie Hodge, bringing me scarves and water. The internet gives them a hand-up in the never ending pursuit of false identity. So much so that they inevitably begin to believe they are what they are not. I didn't live anywhere near a mall as a teen. I hung out with friends, not with my Dell. Yes, we played video games to a great extent. BUT, at least we were together while doing so. We hung out together and played. Now there is no need for this. Why get up off your beanbag? Just log-in and your hanging out, virtually. Not literally. Big difference. This all sets a precedence for an acute disconnect with whats real.

Is your definition of "friend" so limited that you have to be able to touch, taste, or smell someone to know that they are your friend? Or are you just superficial, and don't know if someone is your friend until you see if they are good looking? ![]() Don't forget...
