So according to you, I'm not a real person?
I didn't say you weren't real. As I am sure you are. People you meet online are not to be trusted. They may not even exist. As I showed in the tragic story I posted on page 2.

I wouldn't trust you. Not if we chatted every night for hours. Not if we did so naked, at about 9pm EST. Not if you PM'd me at 8:50 pm EST to make sure I didn't forget. wink wink nudge nudge........

People get killed, raped, scammed, molested and flat out heart broken when they forget that the internet is a wasps nest of disgusting liars and fake ass nobodies. If you'd like I could post a few hundred examples of what I'm talking about.

Heh, you can trust me on this, you don't have anything I want or need that I don't already have or can get on my own.

Why would you assume I would want to converse in the nude with you? Or call you for that matter? I've known people for years and never once felt the need to call them or take off my clothes during our converstations. Wink, wink all you want, not every cyber connection is based on sex, just like in real life. Or don't you believe men and women can be friends unless there is sex involved?

There are plenty of examples of people being scammed online, I didn't disagree with you there, what I do disagree with you is that everyone is out to get something from you. You do understand that there are many successful marriages that began with an online friendship?

I suppose you're right. I just think too many people forget to be smart about it.

I live in Virginia, plenty of those here in my 3-D world. Why do you think I have online friendships?

I accept your invitation for an online friendship, but you gotta lose the attitude and the assumption that our friendship is based on sex.

I totally agree. People ignore red flags, online and in real life.

Heh, there's not much I take serious, especially online. Fire up the peace pipe!

WTF?

I'm not reading that bullsh*t.

Cut the crap and tell me what your trying to say.
I am saying that your story on page two, and your constant reliance on "stories" to make your point is fallacious.

Specifically, anecdotes, which is what these "stories" are, are not valid evidence of anything.

Prove using EVIDENCE, not isolated stories, any of the supposed arguments you have asserted in this thread.

This isn't an "anecdotal story". It is not made up or something I observed from my life. ITS NEWS. ITS REAL.

And guess what big boy? This "story" IS NOT an "anecdotal fallacy".

This thread is about "kids on myspace acting retarded". So I post a REAL LIFE and TRUE example of how a teens "second life" can get the best of them. This story has been all over the news. So I guess news stories can't be used now, huh?

Why do you always gotta bust my balls for no reason?

Those are anecdotes. An anecdote is a story (which can be true) regarding an example of a certain situation. The fact that it comes from the news and/or is "real" makes no difference.

Anecdotes =/= Evidence

The fallacy is in thinking that an anecdote is representative of a majority or even a meaningful percentage of the true situations.

A common example is what is called the "Volvo fallacy": You want to buy a Swedish car. Doing your research, you find that JD Power, Consumer Reports, and the Center for Scientific Study of Swedish Car Reliability (made that one up) ALL say with conclusive scientific evidence that Volvos are more reliable than Saabs. The night before you are to buy your car, however, you go to a party. At the party, you discuss your plan with someone who says "Oh, I would NEVER buy a Volvo, my Uncle had one and he had all kinds of problems with it. I have a Saab and I love it." The next day, you buy a Saab. You have made your decision based upon the anecdotal fallacy.

Get it?

Your stories of SINGLE incidents regarding the internet are all but meaningless. Unless you have CONCLUSIVE evidence that there is any more crime or other problems going on over the internet than in real life, your argument is fallacious.

(by the way, this post would not have been needed if you had simply read the link I provided earlier in the thread. Had you read that post, you would have never made the post you just did, since you would have realized how silly it was.)

Why are you always so f*cking snippy, bud? For real, get a grip on yourself. Try discussion on this board as opposed to your usual combative argumentative style. It's getting real old.

What you don't understand is that I'm not "making a decision based on a fallacy" as you so eloquently worded it. I posted a true, real life example of a teen getting so wrapped up in her second life that she threw away her first life, her real life because of a slight that came at her from a boy that didn't even exist.

My opinion is based on observation. As I have observed, pertaining specifically to the thread topic "Myspace kids are retarded", that kids are too emotionally underdeveloped to understand where the line lies between whats real and whats fake. For your assertions to be true, I must have formed my opinion because of reading these stories. This isn't true. I have formed my opinion due to reasons external to media reports. Stories like this reinforce what I already believed.

The fallacy as I see it exists when people turn to the internet for virtual companionship when the could get the same in abundance by simply not investing so much time online.

Go ahead and rest your argument upon silly thought experiments. It does well to bolster you pointless desire to jerk people around.

Well my deer (pun intended) Rest assured, I'm not some naive teenager or lovelorn female who gives out her personal information to just anyone. (such as the girl in Ruksak's story) If there is someone I am interested in meeting, and I can't verify their true identity by the information they've given me online communication in a chat room or a message board is as far as it goes. Any hint of untruth and all communication ends. Simple as that.

Red flags were waving when that young girl's mother didn't question how a single mother, recently moved to a new state from a poor family had time to home school her kids? Didn't she bother to check out "his" address? "He" lived in her town? I know all about liars on the net, I once had a Nigerian try to scam me on a dating site. (beware they are full of them) Actually it was pretty funny. Thru broken English, poor syntax, very bad spelling, and very long pauses, his told me a story how his parents had died in a recent plane crash. After one conversation he confessed he was madly in love with me and would I help him with some "paperwok" while his fathers estate was being settled? Rather silly of him, as a widow, I know all about lawyers, death certificates, life insurance, and settling estates. It was fun toying with him for a few weeks. What was even funnier was when Oprah had a show on Nigerian scammers and showed the same photograph he had tried to use on me. Sadly a woman had fallen for his act and given him a few thousand dollars.

As I said before, I have several friends I communicate with online and we've also met in person. Our friendships were cultivated out of honesty and trust. My personal safety and that of my family comes first. I don't participate in long distance relationships with men that are of a sexual nature and I would never put myself in a situation where I was concerned about someone taking advantage of me. My neighbor across the street could be a rapist as well. Does that mean just because he lives in my 3-D world I'm going to trust him anymore than I would someone I met online? In truth, I'm more concerned because he knows my daily habits and could potentially become an actual physical threat.

These are the kinds of ads you'll find on Myspace..

Do these ads reflect the intelligence of Myspace users?
yes

As for myspace users here, (myself included - just for the honor of having a profile mind you)

Here is the solution:
