One of the world’s most respected scientists is embroiled in an extraordinary row after claiming that black people are less intelligent than white people. James Watson, a Nobel Prize winner for his part in discovering the structure of DNA, has provoked outrage with his comments, made ahead of his arrival in Britain today.

The 79-year-old geneticist said he was “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours - whereas all the testing says not really.". He said he hoped that everyone was equal, but countered that “people who have to deal with black employees find this not true”. He says that you should not discriminate on the basis of colour, because “there are many people of colour who are very talented, but don’t promote them when they haven’t succeeded at the lower level”. He writes that “there is no firm reason to anticipate that the intellectual capacities of peoples geographically separated in their evolution should prove to have evolved identically. Our wanting to reserve equal powers of reason as some universal heritage of humanity will not be enough to make it so”.

I don't find this strange. Different kinds of people have different strengths and weaknesses. If black people are less intelligent, then they are physically stronger than the rest. Or they may be more talented in music than others. Asians may be better in Mathematics than others, yet they maybe physically smaller and lacking in strength....etc. Do you find this surprising? As I said, I don't.

Perhaps there is an additional explanation for his statements here. Poor living conditions presented by the majority of African nations results in decreased learning ability and retention? It really does not have to do with their skin color per se' just that a large concentration of people with the same skin color are living in poor conditions that effect the general concepts that we attribute to intelligence. I think we could find out the same for any race living in similar circumstances.

We pulled blacks from the primal ooze of primitivism. Its been thousands of years since a Caucasian society can be shown to live in primitive tribal conditions. Intelligence leads to invention and innovation. When we were sailing massive ships, building castles and inventing great machines, most black were still beating rocks together and shooting poison darts at monkeys.

It is statistically true, but it is more of a diet (Africa) and cultural (USA) phenomenon, there is absolutely no genetic barrier that prevents blacks from being as smart as whites.

The ability or inclination to wage war is not any any manner a trait of intelligence. Rather pure unfiltered human animal. The difference found within this context is, at what period in time were whites using guns and warships to wage war, while blacks were using spears and rocks?

Curious people must ask, if life started in Africa, how is it that life today in Africa is among the most primitive in the world?

I never stated whites are "superior". We are in many ways, flawed beyond repair even more so than are non-whites. Because of our transgressions seen in the past. I would also like to include what I think is fact, Asians are far smarter than are Caucasians. I am not offended by this, nor would I be offended if an Asian man said this to me. I would agree. Why can't more people be racially honest? Why is this taboo, especially when whites do it?

TinyBear's argument is good if one wants to set out to massacre and enslave some foreign population. "We're just trying to 'modernize' them," one might say.

Anyway, a lot about intelligence is relative to culture. For example, plenty of Americans would view Taoists as complete idiots for being so anti-materialistic, but the philosophy behind it is, in general, pretty intelligent and well-reasoned. There are some bizarre superstitiuous practices involved with some, but it doesn't mean everything about them is stupid.

It makes me think Watson is the idiot who tagged along.

I'm surprised none of you have yet addressed the obvious, either.

He speaks about Africa, not blacks.

I'm willing to bet that if he did any sort of testing, he did it with Africans with little or no formal education.

The only way he could make a comparable study is if he tested whites of equal social, economic, and political structures.

Where did we surpass black people, in general, and advance our society (industrialize) in the first place? And why did they not keep up (Africa)?

You can measure the degree of civilization by how much time a person needs to labor for survival.

More free time means more time for research, leisure, and reproduction.

Given that humans first flourished in the Middle East / North-eastern Africa, they had a high calorie, steady diet that allowed them the free time to breed.

Population pressure forced expansion until they ran into other cultures with less free time, fewer calories in their diet, and they conquered them.

Well what do you do with conquered people?

You enslave them. Make them do your work for you.

Now instead of needing to put in 12 man hours a day for your survival, someone else does the work.

More free time, more babies, etc.

Well they figured out that the people in the South-Westerly direction couldn't fight back as hard, so they were conquered more.

But they also realized that Africa isn't the best place to survive... it's not easy. So they spread in other, more fertile directions.

The intellectual deficiency of the majority of the black population in Africa isn't the result of genetics... it's the result of the inability, way back when, to survive with enough ease to win wars.

I am willing to believe environment, opportunity and diet to be factors. Not genetics, though. Of course, I have a vested interest in that. People have made the same argument about women. And I'm not about to buy that.

With breeding comes child-bearing and the instinctive need for the mother to be the initial, primary care-giver.

When the men could lounge, the women had to still engage in their primary labor. You don't want a slave raising your kids.

Having children does not necessitate a lower intelligence. If you've ever been around small children, you would know that if anything, it necessitates even greater intelligence.
