It reminds me of the case of Paul Ernst Grüninger, who was police chief in the canton of St Gallen up on the German border, until 1939 when he was fired for having saved the lives of thousands of Jewish refugees by helping them into Switzerland. For his trouble he was later even prosecuted and convicted in the Swiss courts. He died in 1972.
