Canadians – No more Mr Nice Guy

I came across this (my translation below) on the website of the German TV/radio network ARD:
Kanadier wollen nicht mehr lieb sein | tagesschau.de

It's a further example of the complexes you can suffer from when you're situated just north of the border from what the writer Will Ferguson describes as "Canada reflected through the fun-house mirror -- warped, wild and colossal"

Too nice for this world?
Canadians – No more Mr Nice Guy

Germans are efficient but humourless, Italians are unreliable and loud-mouthed, the British drink tea and can't cook. Almost every nation has to put up with prejudices and stereotypes, even Canadians. Apparently they are bothered by the fact that the rest of the world finds them merely nice. The country's National History Society thought that something should be done about this and decided to publish a list of the ten nastiest Canadians to prove that the denizens aren't always quite that nice.

Turn in villains here

"We're looking for Canada's most disgusting, useless, nastiest and destructive individuals", says Deborah Morrison, the society's president. Sinister characters, she says, have far more interesting lives than the nice but boring. On the website of the society's magazine, "The Beaver", Morrison called on readers to send in no-holds-barred denunciations of the worst Canadians. Not only that, but a commission of historians has been set up to provide an expert view regarding national villains.

Not much luck so far

The project has not been a great success. Apart from the usual suspects such as politicians, Canadians seem to get most worked up about figures from the world of hockey, people whose profile doesn't loom terribly high beyond the nation's borders. One favourite is Harold Ballard, former owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs – hardly a match for world-class dastards like Kim Jong Il, Osama bin Laden and Genghis Khan. (...)

Canada, or at least Toronto wasn't nice to me. I said "Hi!" in passing to about 12 people, and I only got like 3 back >.<

You misunderstand. Canadians are reserved, not as garrulous as Americans, not nearly as likely to step up to the urinal next to yours and cry "Hi thar! How'r'yew?"

It's kind of pathetic that Canadians can't find any nasty citizens to show us. We have so many and they have so few; it just doesn't seem fair. We should share some of ours with them. They can grant them citizenship then claim them as their own. I'd be honored to help with the nomination process on this side.

Canada has to have some politicians...

Bin Ladden was actually a Lumberjack from Dildo Newfoundland (That's right, there's a place call Dildo in Newfoundland) but we just slapped a turbin on his head, and wrapped up his pet moose in sheep wool.... friggin Bush didn't know the difference..... and everybody wonders why he hasn't be caught yet.... *snikcers* Wrong part of the world there buddy......

That's correct.... why would I lie to any of you..... I have all the facts here in front of me.....

Here.... just so you can believe what I tell you:

Oh wait, I said too much..... *Calls the History Police to rewrite this post*

I don't know about this. They seem to hide behind their hockey protection. Some of those guys hit each other so hard I would suspect it would be better to be hit by a freight train. You gotta be mean to play hockey, don't cha think?

Conrad Black is Canadian. I could rest my case there, but the list does go on. Take that mass-murderer fella out in BC fer instance.

They covered that in the article.

As for Newfoundland, get a detailed map and have a look at some of the place names. Delightful.

Naw... you just gotta have half your nerves shot in your spine to not feel anything.... either that or live in our winters to freeze the nerves.

I do seem to remember an interesting story about the Canadian Parliament buying themselves gifts (rings I think), that wasn't particularly nice

Or the Liberal Sponsorship Scandal that just happened a few years back... more of these jerks should have been thrown in jail for such a waste and disregard of tax dollars.

Gordon O'Connor and Rick Hillier, accused of war crimes by leading experts in interational law:

Is Canada's defence minister a war criminal?

Exactly, read a Canadian history text book, they mention slavery in Canada two, maybe three times.
