Joint research backs Tai Chi and water work to beat pain

Joint research backs Tai Chi and water work to beat pain-News-World-TimesOnline

Hydrotherapy and Tai Chi, the Chinese exercise system, can help older people with severe arthritis to move and feel better, Australian research suggests.

Quote:
Among men and women aged 60 and older with chronic osteoarthritis of the hip and knee, those who had hydrotherapy or practised Tai Chi over 12 weeks experienced significant reduction in pain and increased physical function scores. Participants in the hydrotherapy group were more likely to attend sessions than those assigned to Tai Chi, the researchers from George Institute for International Health at the University of Sydney report in the medical journal Arthritis & Rheumatism.

They randomly assigned 152 people to hydrotherapy, Tai Chi or a waiting group to hour-long classes twice a week. At 24 weeks, all improvements had been sustained and were greater than have been demonstrated in studies of traditional land-based exercise for arthritis patients. (Reuters)
(Or qi kung), the benefits of these disciplines now begins to be taken seriously by the west.

Yeah this is something I learned at a very young age.... I have always loved swimming.... great cardialvascular workout, less gravity strain on joints and muscles when working out, great practice and exercise for your lungs, balance, co-ordination..... frig we should go back to being fish, because it's a lot easier on your body then living on land for some reason.

I remember when I was around 7 or 8 and at the pool or beach, I'd be floating there trying to get all the old people in the water, spewing off all these health reasons to them..... they all kinda just looked at me funny..... oh well... they're probably dead now.... they should have listened to me
