Yeah but I'm from up north anyway, a lot of the dialect crosses even if the accent doesn't. As far as some people I've met down south I may as well be Scottish anyway, which is nearly as insulting as being called a Geordie.

Well, I suppose I'm biased for two reasons: one, I'm a yank; two, I've lived in Japan and China, and the overwhelming majority in both countries say they can understand American English much more easily than any British variety.

Oh and three, my girlfriend starts panting with desire any time she hears a British/Australian accent in movies/TV.

They can understand American English better than homeland English because yours is all over the telly. I remember my 1st year drama and all the kids acted with an American accent without even noticing it, because all of the films they watched were dominated by Americans.

On number 3, it's fantastic, I think I'll spend a few months in the States testing out the accent thing. I went to DC for 3 days when I was 18 on a college trip and pulled an American bird in the hotel elevator on the basis of my accent. I can't wait to see what 3 months in bars and clubs with this accent will do

The most unfair part of it all is that it doesn't work in reverse. The prefecture I lived in when I was in Japan was full of gorgeous English women, from all over: Bath, Nottingham, Manchester, Birmingham. I can't remember any of them ONCE saying, "Oh, core, I just love that American accent I do."

English people hear your accent all the time. It saturates our TV. It's no novelty to hear it. Or maybe our women need more than an accent to get them going
