What's your favorite urban legend?

I gotta say, there are some great ones out there. But Bloody Mary will always be the best. I never ran into anyone who had the guts to do it until I told my Chinese friends about it.

Hercules, the 'Liger'; a cross between a lion and a tiger and, at 10 ft. long and still growing, the largest cat in the world.

Are you saying that that particular cat is a hoax, or that the breed is?

I havn't seen an elephant either, but I'll take it on the numerous documented cases of it from zoo's breeding them that they do exist. When a male lion mates with a female tiger, the gene that tells the liger to stop growing is overridden. Which means they have, without becoming obese, grown up to 1200lbs.

A certain fact or phenomenon doesn't have to be a hoax to be an urban legend, does it? In fact my understanding is many urban legends are true.

If you ask Napoleon Dynamite, the liger legend is definitely right on the money.

My favorite is the US media's tale of 9/11...

Once an "urban legend" is proven to be true, then it is just history or a real phenomena. The "legends" of a wealthy land to the west put about by Vikings talking of Vinland were a kind of urban legend of the middle ages till Columbus found them to be true. Yet we don't talk of the Americas as an urban legend, do we?

Again, the liger is not an urban legend. It is a zoo/circus exhibit. Even if Napoleon thinks they are bred for skills in magic.

The Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City had a "liger" for a couple yeras, until some religious fruitloop went up on the mountainside above the zoo and kiled it with a rifle because it was an "abomination against God".

My personal favorite urban legend is from Reagan when he talks about the "welfare people buying steaks with their food stamps and then driving home n a brand new Caddilac".

I hear this same story all over the net now(usually from right wingers trying to discredit helping the poor) and to date NO ONE can verify ever actually seeing this happen.

Heh, "welfare queens," that was a brilliant one. Sometimes I can't help but admire the GOP for their ingenuity at confusing and misleading the American people.

Of course, Reagan was the target of some urban legends as well, but they weren't nearly as inspired. My favorite was the one that claimed he said, in relation to whether we should prevent logging to maintain our forests, "If you've seen one redwood, you've seen 'em all."

Actually, what he said was, "a tree is a tree - how many more do you need to look at?"

I have seen exactly this type of behavior. Trading Food Stamps for drugs, alchohol, prostitutes, labor, cigarettes, lottery tickets.

What can I say, I ran with a diverse crowd.

But at least the benefits reached somebody in need... think of how happy that prostitute's children were when she came home with a brand new block of WIC cheese.

Welcome LtMisha.

Does Batman really count as an urban legend? Are there people who believe he actually exists???
