| ~Ruthless Debater~ Location: Cape Town, South Africa. Posts: 433 | English Premier League... It's the English football (soccer) league for those of you don't know... Probably the most competitive, popular, talked about football (soccer) league in the world. I was hoping in this topic I could discuss matches, transfers, gossips with other passionate football fans... ![]() |

More of a vague supporter than a fan, but happy to talk about it! ![]() I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. When you say local team, are your leagues truly made up of local lads or are they more like our football, where a team represents a town but in reality is made up of players from all over the country? I think I know, but since I have a chance to learn for sure from an informed source... Still, at least Chelsea got thumped by Liverpool, so the title race is still open. By the way - Magpies = Newcastle, Royals = Reading. Respectively 12th & 9th in the Premiership (not bad for a newly promoted team).Quote:
As an example....Newcastle's key men are Turkish, Northern Irish, and...Nigerian, if memory serves, with a couple of Englishmen, whilst Reading have a S.Korean, an Icelander, an American, an Irishman...etc. Sounds like the lead-up to a bad joke, but that's the case. In the really big teams - like Manchester United or Chelsea - they have the spending power to procure the best players from all over the world - so they do.I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. Matt!!! That's unfair. Why english fans call us "glory hunters" when we support Man United? Man United actually came to play in SA few months ago. yeah man.. Newcastle got some fantastic young guys in the team, despite the thrashing in the hands of Barmingham. LoL O. Martins is awesome. Chelsea drew with Reading at home two weeks ago if I remember correctly. Reading is doing much better than Watford and Sheffield. But yeah... Gooners (arsenal) got some awesome players. They will probably take FA Cup. Too soon to say though....

Most of their fan base is overseas these days - they're hardly a local club anymore! ![]() Just peered at Reading so far this season - Won 10, Drawn 4, Lost 10 - pretty good - and Steve Coppell (the manager) has got a great head on his shoulders - refusing to even talk about anything apart from Premiership survival! | radial spaghetti Location: YOU Posts: 23 | Fantastic to see the Royals doing so well, I remember at the start of the season, all the pundits saying they would struggle to stay up. Its great when a side like Reading shows up clubs worth hundreds of times more than them. My only concern is that reading will do what Wigan have done, have a honeymoon season then slip down next season. There garanteed safe for now, but if they lose key players like Doyle and Shorey, they could be in real trouble next season. And my other local side Wycombe holding Chelsea at home, a team worth 3,000 times as much, only managed a draw. shame about the 2nd leg. |

Then again, this is the nation that has rejected every attempt to teach us the metric system like a bad joke. “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.” -Albert Einstein |

| radial spaghetti Location: YOU Posts: 23 | My understanding is that its more to do with with the larger sports in the US like baseball and Anerican football stopping soccer from developing a foothold. There also just isn't the history and tradition behind football in the states that you would find in other countries. Baseball etc are seen as the traditional sports of north America with hero worship and tradition on a par with Football in the UK and Europe |

But still, if you notice the number of attendants (avg 75000) at Ol Trafford, you wouldn't doubt for a second that it has one of the most passionate local fan base.

| ~Ruthless Debater~ Location: Cape Town, South Africa. Posts: 433 | Lol... yeah... that's one thing I hate, which is US take over of best English football club. Its more like passion Vs money. Although, Liverpool could do with some extra funds and stop relying on players like Herpia and Luis Garcia. They suck. |
