hmm, there is a sound, but there is no such thing as sound to one who can't hear, this discussion is very mundane, I know.
That's the same reasoning that there is no sun or light to blind people..... so that means it doesn't exist?

"No sound" to me means "Non Existent"

But light is able to be sensed in aother ways besides sight, and anyway, I'm saying that a sound wave is not a sound itself, a sound is what we hear when the sound wave hits us, our brain creates the sound out of the vibration.

Alright.... here's another one for when you are ready.

Many have debated that when a tree falls in the woods and nobody is around to hear it, it does not produce a sound..... yet when the tree collides with the ground, there is a shock wave and force being produced, which would alter the normal pattern of the air around it, causing a sound wave..... just because there is not an ear to pick it up, doesn't mean there is no sound, correct?

Wouldn't that be the same as if a plane crashed in the ocean and I didn't see it, means it never happened?
I think many of those who say it makes no sound are Cartesian phenomenalists.

Lol, based on this dictionary, the answer to that question depends on if you choose definition 1 or 2

I assume if you put a tape recorder in a room with a deaf person and a sound you still have the proof the sound was there. Sound, light and other such things exist on the production end and not the receiving end.

While I agree that sound is something the brain processes the pressure differential that is what we call sound must exist before we can "hear" it. It's kind of like radio waves. They are most definitely there even if we don't have a radio.

I'm better at understanding the physical nuts-and-bolts of things than the philosophical angle, I'll admit.

How much wood, would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
Easy if you know the whole tounge twister which is

How much wood, would a woodchuck chuck if a wood chuck chould chuck wood.

A Woodchuck could chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck wood.

It isn't diffinative as there is variations amoung the population due to diversity....... Is that up to your standards?

The common sence approch- If a tree fall in the middle of the forest then there should be animals around which are capable of hearing/being in the tree when it fell so either way problem solved. We only have a problem when you get the situation where a meteor hits a lifeless planet and nothing is around to detect it such as life or monitering equipment.

The tape recorder records a sound wave, a vibration. It would then recreate that with another vibration, which our brain would interpret as sound. Our brain creates the sensation of sound. Without an ear, there is no sound, just vibration. Of course if you define sound as a vibration, then you're right, but I think that a sound only stops being simply a vibration when an ear picks it up and makes it audible to its owner. Either way, I think this argument is defined as pointless, but it's interesting nonetheless.

It's pointless as all hell, but I still enjoy these things now and again.

So, pressing on into the void...

Sound is only the name we give these differences in pressure, but we are not naming the perception rather than the physical properties of what a sound IS. In other words, we say a guitar string makes a sound rather than the string makes us HEAR it.

Okay, that's it for me. I have to leave work in a minute and they start turning off the lights with no warning.

Ha, I'm currently fixing a small spyware problem on my computer, wait, that's not exactly better. If I ever become global dictator the first thing I'll do is make spywaring a capital offense.

Back on the sound thing.... I just got finished watching How it's Made, and they were showing how they make cocking guns, and how they use sound waves to fuse the rubble handle together.... it has no ears.... so sound does exist.

That's vibrations, as I said, it depends if you define sound as simply vibrations or the sensation that we hear.

Why would one even think that the existence of things are dependent on humans to perceive them? Oh, it must be the ego centric thoughts of humans getting in the way.

Why not just go nuts and say: "If there are no humans, is there a perceptual universe?"

Now, then as for my question, a simple riddle:

"In spring I am gay in handsome array;
in summer more clothing I wear;
when colder it grows I fling off my clothes;
and in winter quite naked appear.
What am I?"

Side effects may include gastrointestinal homicide, theft of luck, apocalyptic hallucinations, and demonic possession. Please do not soak in milk as doing so will result in death.

I was hoping for more fun answers :(

Besides which, trees don't wear clothing, they wear leaves

Forgive me for assuming that leaves could be clothing. If you were looking for bark, I believe birch trees shed bark as well.

Trees made the most logical sense to me..

I never said humans, anything that can hear can suffice.
